- Any WVL from 1-104 (go 3-speeders!) - sadly I didn't get to go on many of them before they started to dwindle. - The old East Thames VPs and VWLs were favourites going up the 185's hills. Sadly gone nowadays. You didn't like WVL105-133, them also being 3 speeders? The VPs had unique ZF gearboxes in that they were 4 speeders instead of 5.

Favourite that's no longer here would have to be AEC or the Scania Routemasters which had the full revs to the end of the gear in auto not changed half way , The 13's old Allison Dartmasters aswell were immaculately turned out and used to go like the clappers , The old ZF Dennis Arrows Capital Citybus used to have on the 179 and the 257 were fantastic aswell they would occasionally show up on the D6 and the Harris Bus Olympians used to go like the clappers aswell with kickdown would leave cars for dust , The 4 speed ZF Trident Lolynes like the original 474 bunch with the old style one front door, X Reg Darts that were on the 173 I always thought were really good buses , as for buses these days didn't like them at first infact hated them as they had no gears so I thought lacked character but E400H are quite good but all time favourite would have to be the Gemini 2 B5LH fantastic buses hybrid with a automated manual gearbox .

Dumb question... how can you tell whether a bus is 2-speeder or 3-speeder or 5-speeder or 253-speeder

They really suit the single deck. Unlike the Volvos single deck on the 444 which looks like a DD that went under a bridge. The new Enviro single deckers dont have a nice ride, especially the annoying restarting of the stop/start system. Needs getting use to. Best bus in terms of ride are the Solos. Best overall, look and ride, the Volvo Gemini 3 like on the 34. Old buses are reminders of my childhood etc. but are by no means close to these modern buses.

The new Citaro C2K;s without doubt, such well built, fast, comfortable and good looking busses Second up is the Citaro Euro 5 (X26, 227, 203) which just sound fantastic Basically anything Citaro. On my local route the 33 my favourite is the Optare Versa as it has superior comfort and sounds a little different to the cummins droning on in the E200's. Looking back a bit I do have very fond memories of the Routemasters and Darts, especially the LU ones that had rear facing seats at the rear like a double decker!

I rode a MMC on the W11 & W16 and had no issues with the ride myself - so much better than the EN & SEN I had previously. Both drivers also seemed quite comfortable with the stop start technology

Didn't like the 03/53reg ones as much, they felt a bit more restricted to me. If I remember correctly they weren't delivered that way and only governed later? Having said that, I've been on a few (108, 111 come to mind) that performed perfectly fine. Wasn't one of the VPs later retrofitted with a 5-speed box? I vaguely remember reading that somewhere.

Citaros are great but on the 108 with those speed humps if you sit in the seat above the wheel arch feels like your back is gonna go suspension really is hard , But another of my favourites well built high quality bus apart from that very nippy .

1. ZF Volvo Olympian - any with a working kickdown - admired the agility and liked the shrieking whine when floored in 1st.
2. ZF Euro 2 Trident - specifically those with V3xx KGW and X20x UMS plates - aggressive, beastly sounding buses. The engine had character - fast and kicked down with a bang.
3. ZF Volvo B7TL (6 speed) - 55 plate VLA and VW classes
Fortunately I've been lucky enough to drive all three types in service - and had passengers YouTubing the occasions!
Only single decks I've really liked are the MAN 14.240s and Citaros. I quite like the grunt of the Euro 5 variant - and the screaming turbos some of the Euro 3 bendies had.
Other batches I have an appreciation for are uprated Euro 3 ZF Tridents and DB300s - very quick when working properly. The only Voith buses I like are Euro 3 and 4 Tridents - there are a few drivers out there who have gotten the hang out of how to handle them and clearly enjoy hammering them. Also the SPDs, for the pronounced wail when floored and the unique screeching retarder!
When I was little I really liked the Pointer 2 Darts - thought they were far more stylish than the goyle-esque R-FOO Darts on the P4 I used from primary school. The crisp engine note of the London Links Citybuses was cool and the interiors were something else!
Never did get into any London spec Leylands really. I found the interiors somewhat garish - bright yellow walls in the Ts really didn't do it for me and didn't like the ZF gearbox the Ls and Ts had. I favoured the ZF Ecomat.
One bus I'm sure I would have liked had I had more exposure to them was the Dennis Arrow. Pity the whole YouTubing of bus rides wasn't a thing in the step entrance era!
