In general most young children like public transport (trains, planes, buses etc.) I just carried on enjoying those things, with my AS smashing it on into a proper interest.

Earliest memories of being young 5 - 6 jumping on the back of RML on route 15 or 15B scared I was going to fall off thinking the bus was moving fast but probably in reality was just moving off. Also remember being on a Fleetline in Central London and noticing it was different to Titans that I was used to on my then local 277 route. My other early memories are Sampsons Fleetlines when I lived in Waltham Abbey.
I lived in Southeast London when I started secondary school but traveled to east London using Kentish Buses route 51 to the Woolwich Ferry (Many varied types was great riding the varied fleet). I also recall the Dockland Minibuses when they begain.

I got into buses because going on a bus used to be a special experience. Most of the time we wouldn't go on long journeys, and if we did it'd be the car, most trips were only within Barking and they'd be done with me walking or in a pram. So the very few times we did take a bus was exciting and I'd want to do it again. This excitement never seemed to wear off and I started researching more about buses, about how they work and this is where I am today I still remember one of my earliest rides on an older Plaxton Pointer on the 62 with its red and grey livery. I also distinctly remember my first upper deck ride, it was on a 369 and we had a ride to Ilford where I brought a Postman pat VHS to watch at home. I also remember the day the 25 converted to Bendy Bus operation. I was only around 5 but as my parents knew I liked buses they took me and my toddler brother out for a journey, as well as to give my little brother his first upper Deck ride. It was a T-KPU from Barking to Stratford, still remember the seat in front having some paint missing. We got off at Stratford Bus Station, walked through Stratford Centre to get the 25 outside Stratford Centre, I remember getting on through the back and sitting on some rear facing seats on the rear half of the near side. We were being followed very closely by an 86 (it was the first time I'd see the 86 in my life and it was gonna be the start of a very long journey with the 86). Once we got to Ilford we got off at the Cinema crossed the road and took a 169 back to Barking. My interest in other versions of public transport came about quite differently. The reason I got into planes being the funniest I was only a very small child around the year 2000-2001 and I was gonna go on Holiday down to Chennai and Dubai, however my Dad had to stay behind due to work commitments. Apparently I didn't stop crying until I sat down on the plane and the Emirates Cabin Crew gave me a goody bag (yes those were a thing back in the day) and I started watching some Teletubbies on the little TV (yeah I even remember what I was watching ). Since then my interest in planes grew, I started researching about the different plane types around. I was only around 1 or 2 when I had my first set of plane rides, but I distinctly remember my next load of plane rides being Boeing 747s with British Airways. Again I remember watching some shows exactly as they happened despite all this was years and years ago, Dexter's Laboratory and Higglytown Heros I managed to bag a ride on Gulf Air's A340 and A330 aircraft a few years later. I've had a ride in a lot of planes since then, A319s and A321s but my latest round was another Emirates round with A380s, an A330 and Boeing 772. I don't really take too much interest for intercity train services, I am aware of some "non average person information" but other than that I'm your average sod on that. However I do take a lot of interest in Metro systems. I actually used to be petrified of going down those log escalators found at tube stations, and getting on the train was effectively a nice reward for me, I started loving my rides on them and my interest grew. I still remember my old tips on unrefurbished D Stock trains with their silver poles and colourful moquettes. I remember the Class 357s while they were purple, and having fun rides on them. I also remember the first time I went to Fenchurch Street Station, I finally discovered where the c2c went after it turned away from the District Line! Another ride I distinctly remember was my first ride on the DLR, we took the tube down to Canning Town and then the DLR from Canning Town to Pontoon Dock to have some fun at Thames Barrier Park, as well as making a stop at City Airport so that I could see some planes. Ah the fun of remembering old times

I remember my first and well second trip on the 111, a day trip to Hampton Court Palace with my parents, thought the route was way to busy for the DRL's that we travelled on, it was only way later I realised the route was M operated and that we were unfortunate enough to of caught an odd working on both journeys! As to getting intrested in buses, as others have said, as a youngster, you like quite a lot of transport related stuff, such as trains and planes, also as my parents and both sets of grandparents never drove, it was always second nature to go everywhere on the bus. Most my mates still don't know I take an intrested in transport related stuff, However I can get away with showing an intrest in aviation at work, seeing as I work in the airline industry!

The earliest memories that I had riding buses was a Stagecoach ALX400 in the early/mid 2000s when is around 3 or 4 although I can't remember which route it was but definitely it was an East London route and those buses was part of my development of becoming a bus enthusiast. I usually noticed that some of those buses have red handrails and some have orange handrails as well.

In regards to your second point, I seem to be a bit unique in that I've only ever really been interested in buses - planes never did it for me whilst Thomas The Tank Engine & the Underground were the furthest I got regarding trains which is why my knowledge about trains is terrible and why anytime I meet bus enthusiasts who talk about trains, I generally end up asking questions which probably come across slightly silly I also to be a bit coy about my hobby to friends but honestly, for the last 10 years, I'm not stuffed and most of my mates openly know I'm a bus enthusiast but they're not really bothered because I've other things I've got in common with them. In fact, some of my work colleagues were sort of grateful when they didn't know how to get to Ilderton Road, Bermondsey by bus for a works party

About to show my age, first bus jouneys I remember were going to visit my Nan who lived in Plaistow on the Barking Road.Catching the 87 (RT) from Rainham with my Mum first to Barking for some shopping, than a Trollybus (665?),always a treat special punched tickets as well.If the driver was not careful it tended to lose the wire going over the humppedback bridge over the Roding, watching the conductor fish out his pole to re-hook was always worth while.Returning to Rainham on the Greenline 723 (RT), to my 5 year old self it seemed to get up quite a head of steam down the A13 if the conditions were favourable.

My parents never had a car, so it would have been an RT on either 43 or 134. I remember great anticipation when MH got its first allocation of Routemasters.
