Its difficult to see what their justification can be. They probably dont want to pay the fees to use the Airport bus station ... so the airport told them to sod off. Most likely explanation, but the airport might be shooting themselves in the foot. Luton Airport changed their mind about Arriva (?) using their facilities a year or three back, but found iirc that Arriva no longer wanted to play ball.

That's what I suspected. I can understand the train operators position and the airport are well within their rights to take such action. As you say it does seem strange that Ensign started running the service without any formal agreement in place.

Luton Airport changed their mind about Arriva (?) using their facilities a year or three back, but found iirc that Arriva no longer wanted to play ball. Luton lost a legal case for unfair competition ... so hardly changed their minds ... and that was only because the contract still allowed Easybus to use the facilities ... which was deemed to be the unfair clause. Arriva lost a tender to National Express who bid more for exclusive rights ... but the Airport become unstuck because of the Easybus exception. Having won the case the airport could not exclude Arriva, but am pretty sure they have to pay some sort of remuneration.

Southend Airport should change their guidance about how early people should get there then if that's the stance they are taking and I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with their stance in case anyone asks - I'm on the fence. If they expect people to get there 2 hours before their flight, have enough range of transport options available at the time like at other airports as currently you need to drive or take a cab because the train arrives later.

Think it maybe best to hear Southend side of the story on why they have banned Ensign from using the airport before people start complaining. They've been contacted and "aim to respond within 10 workibg days" I e-mailed the airport and they responded promptly.
Many thanks for your correspondence. I am unable to respond to each enquiry regarding the Ensign bus individually but please see the statement from the airport below:
“London Southend Airport works with a number of transport partners to offer its passengers different options to get to and from the airport in a sustainable way and is always happy to discuss ideas to improve service to its customers. We very recently agreed new services with Abellio Greater Anglia which extend the schedule of the airport rail service to earlier and later trains. At this current time, the airport does not have any agreement in place with Ensign buses.”

They are using that response for all current queries about the situation

They are using that response for all current queries about the situation Well IMHO this is a shower of **it response. All the timetables show the extra trains commencing in September. The extra trains are also fairly useless as the only serve Liv St and Stratford (Shenfield one way), so little use for locals. A massive missed opportunity. Why not let Ensign operate until Sept?

Although I have very little interest in cars, for some reason I always enjoyed Wheeler Dealers - at least while Edd China was the co-presenter.
What has this got to do with Ensign I hear you ask. Well, I picked up a copy of Edd's autobiography the other day, and there's a whole section about the period he spent living in his own double decker. He wanted a Routemaster but it was too pricey so ended up buying an ex-Ribble Atlantean from a place on 'the A13 near Rainham'. And because the site he was intending to park at was no longer available, he ended up living on site at Rainham where he converted it.

It has come to my attention that despite the codes in GA's printed timetable implying a Sept start date, these extra early/late trips are already running. You can sort of understand their stance in this situation.

Very interesting and it looks like they might be replaced by diesel vehicles as well judging by a comment made by Mr Newman further down the page - would have to guess more BCI deckers given they've taken a liking to them.
