Why do the E200s on the W19 (Walthamstow-Ilford) have a constantly sounding alarm in the cab? It activates when the bus is either stopped, in motion but noticed mostly when braking. It seems more advanced than just a parking sensor. E200s on other routes & operators don't have this alarm active at all times, so what is the purpose? Video of alarm: streamable.com/cb11nMust be annoying as hell for bus drivers, to me it would be a distraction. --- Chris Date | CMPDTwitter: twitter.com/cmpd_date

Sounds like the indicator to me, just like our E200/E400 MMCs. It soon just becomes background noise to the driver. I think the most annoying buses for beeping were the Euro 3 Dennis Trident Presidents, particularly the PDL class!
Out of interest, what are the engines on these buses like? Can they rev high in an identical way to the revered MMCs on the P13? I've been following them on the TfL rail replacement route and it seems like they can shift!

They were indeed annoying and as you said they do eventually become background noise that we become somewhat immune to. I will never forget one night on the N77 (now N87) in the Raynes Park area when a passenger came up to me from the lower deck back seat complaining about the noise as he couldn't sleep. I had politely replied that the system is automatic with general driving and that I have no control over the volume. Suffice to say that I believe one or two PDLs had the volume reduced by the engineers.... but not by much. There was a separate incident at Sutton Station on my N44 where I couldn't access the road to the bus stand and therefore briefly left the bus on the main road while I went to get some cash from the hole in the wall. As I returned back to my PDL a member of public said to me that there's something wrong with the bus because it's beeping all the time, the beep being so loud that it could be heard from outside. I simply explained to him that it beeps in unison with the hazard lights. He had replied that he never noticed that before with buses to which I explained that it's only a selective few that do it.

Same engine and configuration as the P13 buses, active kickdown as i was on one on its first day, fantastic buses indeed.

Is it bad to say that I actually liked the indicator noise on the 02 & 03 reg PDL's lol. It's buses like them that I miss greatly particularly the 02 reg with its rarer combinations of a Euro III engine with a 3 spd Voith box.

Doesn't surprise me, some were too loud! I drove 51 plate TPL247 when I started at Metroline. The trainer opened up the panel behind the headlights and among the tangle of wires, was a switch that allowed the tone and volume of the indicator to be changed. I wish I knew that at the time, mind you I would have been too timid to try lol
