A couple things about the article. 1) The TfL network planner manager's name is BOB BLITZ. What a name. He can do what he wants with that name. 2) W12 a great example of what has happened in recent years. A huge bombshell of infrastructure works hit right on the route. Journey times and reliability suffer, passengers make fewer bus journeys. TfL react by cutting bus service. However, a half an hour service for a route with a small bus is asking for trouble. In theory, instead of signing petitions, the best way to get the bus frequency back is for people to absolutely pack the buses, write in overcrowding complaints, and the in a few months time Mr Bob Blitz will come out with the now infamous statement 'to match demand..........'

"In theory". Doesn't work that way. Downwards variations happen whenever TfL want them because they pocket the saving. Upwards variations take up to 5 years because TfL usually tie them to the tendering / contract review cycle. The W12 was recently retendered and re-awarded to CT Plus so forget any increase *unless* someone makes the Mayor's life an utter misery over it. It would take some pretty ferocious lobbying by Jennette Arnold and Keith Prince AMs to even cause a flutter of anxiety at TfL or City Hall and I doubt they'll be jumping up and down o'er much about the W12. Interesting, though, that the Labour Party are making a song and dance in what I'd guess was a Tory council ward. That might raise the hackles with someone like Keith Prince who currently chairs the Assembly Transport Cttee.

TfL are clearly in "no surrender" mode about the W12 as these Mayor's Answers show.
It would, of course, have helped if Caroline Pidgeon has asked some different questions to get behind what has really gone on - i.e. TfL funded works have slowed down the service enormously and the Mayor's fares freeze has meant TfL have no money to fund an increased PVR to maintain frequencies.

More fibs from the Mayor about the impact of Mini Holland and associated works.
How funny then that I was told exactly the opposite by a senior TfL manager from Surface Transport!

So now the politicians are chucking rocks at each other to score political points - like that will work. I note also they want the route shortened - guess which end they will want sacrificed? Yep the Walthamstow one given the campaign is concentrated at Wanstead. It's clear from the Mayor's Answer that TfL are not going to budge on this one. There's no political cost to TfL or the Mayor from doing noting / ignoring the campaign for the next several years so they can just sit back and relax.

So Redbridge politicians want a better service for them and the Walthamstow end can go hang. Typical "small picture" response there.

While I understand why the campaigners are cross someone needs to tell them in blunt terms how things now work. The W12 will certainly not be the last cut to services in and around Wanstead. There will, I am sure, be more cuts to the 66, W13, W14. I'd not even be astonished if the 308 was also trimmed back. I also note that the "computerised" message from Claire Mann has been played again. Someone needs to tell her that a bit of variety in official messages wouldn't go amiss otherwise the campaigners will feel they are being trolled by TfL. It will be very interesting to see if anything comes of the W12 campaign as it's one of the most vocal so far. I do think TfL are in "la la la not listening" mode because if they concede the campaigners' point about the W12 then they are sunk when it comes to other cuts. Therefore they have to hold the line and not waiver on any cuts because they won't meet their financial targets.

The W14 and W13 would not be surprised if they drop them to 20 mins as they are not that busy anymore and they have much bigger buses. Would not be surprised if the W14 is punished with a 30 min evening service.
