Looking at the Travel News of the Metro newspaper today, there are no District Line / Hammersmith & City Line trains between Tower Hill / Hammersmith and East Ham and London Overground are not stopping at Whitechapel all weekend "owing to Crossrail construction work". If Crossrail (the Elizabeth Line) should have opened last year and there have been some test trains, what construction work is still being undertaken now?

Besides a firsthand visit this progress update video is probably the next best thing to explain why the rail lines through Whitechapel close on the weekend I would say it looks as though the Crossrail platforms are more closer to completion than the surface levels of the station.

Can't help thinking that Thames Valley commuters will find the 345's as a bit of a downgrade, what with the lower seating capacity, lack of toilets and initially short formations. Whenever I've travelled on them, I've found them to be rather drafty too. I dare say TfL will initially receive a few complaints about the use of these, but that'll all be forgotten once the core section finally opens! When I told my dad, who commutes for work between West Drayton & Ealing Bdy about his new trains having less seats and no toilets, I got the roll of the eyes! But it reminds me I've only my next set of rest days to get what is probably my last chance to get a bit of 'classic' 165/166 action on the Thames Valley!

I will find the 345s a huge downgrade, wholly inadequate for long distance travel, metroising the Reading stoppers won't go down well for the reasons you mention. I would much rather have a comfortable 387. I'm going to learn the times of the Didcot stoppers so I can still get 387s at Ealing Broadway.

Seems like the line has now been delayed to an Autumn 2021 opening for the core and the full line is expected to open December 2022.

I noticed in the middle of last week at Romford station, they moved the barrier at the extended part of the platform and the train now goes all the way to the front of the platform. This is for trains heading to Liverpool St on platform 4.
