But but I will surely fall over and kill myself as soon as the bus moves ........ at least if we fall over we can sue them again😈 Yes. I did think if reducing accidents was just a smokescreen. I wondered if TfL were advised to put it by their lawyers so if someone has an accident, they can't be sued because they could just say 'We told you to hold on'.

I wondered if TfL were advised to put it by their lawyers so if someone has an accident, they can't be sued because they could just say 'We told you to hold on'. It quite clearly isn't a smokescreen. There is plenty of evidence on the TfL website about accident stats and also about the initiatives the Mayor has demanded on safety both on the buses and on TfL managed rail services. Leon Daniels has also commented on another discussion forum that lawyers and the risk of being sued was nothing to do with it either. The basic issue here is a bizarre contradiction between basic statistics (i.e. bus travel is essentially extremely safe) and the experience / perceptions of a tiny proportion of accident victims who have shouted from the sidelines until the politicians heard. We have then moved in a politically driven arena rather than one centred on properly reducing the worst manageable risks. These are largely from vehicles driven by non professional drivers and from passengers / pedestrians distracted by their phones. Note that TfL is not proposing to reduce the availability of wifi on the Tube despite evidence that people desperate to check their phones are having accidents as a result. Worse TfL is proposing that we get 4G everywhere including telephony in tunnels. If we think people are distracted now imagine how bad it will be in future.

While making my way out of Oxford Circus Station today I couldn't help but notice the amount of people on their phones - however I'll admit that's because I wasn't actually on my phone for a change and just listening to my music. Not to mention the amount of near misses I've seen because someone in a crowd is on their phone while there are people rushing behind them. It's also quite common for many commuters to be listening to music or playing a game on their phone while on a tube, but automatically get onto anything that can be used via WiFi when the tube pulls into a station. While commuting it's very easy now to chat to people on my phone through social media with the advances in technology, something else I've also noticed is that many people prefer to have both of their hands on their phone while on a tube train instead of having one of the on a pole!

One of the points raised by Leon Daniels is on bus injuries caused by vehicles braking.
This was not covered by the initial announcement.

I hate to say it, but I think the 'please hold on while the bus is moving' message is going to make a comeback. It's stuck in people's psyches to prepare to hear the message, thus potentially repeating the message every time someone consciously thinks the message is about to play (triggered by the bus stopping). Unfortunately this is my thought-out, impartial position; but I duly sense a vibe of "course it's common sense, but we have to say it anyway" from the Health & Safety department, which will only influence the message to be rolled out on a mandatory basis.

I can't see why although quite honestly I'm not greatly fussed either way, I didn't even notice that announcement had stopped until I read about it on here.

Trouble is there has still been accidents where people fell on the bus while it was on. Think the type of person that are likely to fall is the type to ignore the messages anyway.

That's a very pessimistic outlook... :/ Myself I think if people hear this come back they will flip out for REAL this time
