So this will see barriers put on the HEX platforms at Paddington, which will charge the 'premium fare'. So if for any reason HEX trains end up on other platforms, passengers will get a nice discounted journey.

So if for any reason HEX trains end up on other platforms, passengers will get a nice discounted journey. That is exactly how I understand it will work. Same concept as applies for the Gatwick Express at Victoria and in a variant way for the South Eastern Hi-Speed from Stratford International to St Pancras (dedicated gatelines at each end for this service).

Where was it going ilford depot? I saw a green GWR train at Stratford the same day, on the wrong side of the metropolis. They deliver a train from Reading to Ilford for refurb and then take a finished one back to Reading. You probably saw the first move. The workings ran over an hour late for some reason (based on realtimetrains info). The bizarre thing, of course, is the train has to be dragged round the NLL by a diesel loco despite there being a nice big electrified tunnel right across London.

I saw a green GWR train at Stratford the same day, on the wrong side of the metropolis. They deliver a train from Reading to Ilford for refurb and then take a finished one back to Reading. You probably saw the first move. The workings ran over an hour late for some reason (based on realtimetrains info). The bizarre thing, of course, is the train has to be dragged round the NLL by a diesel loco despite there being a nice big electrified tunnel right across London. Even more bizarre considering that the entire route from Reading to Ilford via the NLL has overhead electrification throughout*. * The only section of the NLL that still uses third-rail is Acton Central - Richmond.

The connection at Richmond was removed years ago, now just ability to reverse in platform 5 and return towards London The triangular junction South Acton, Bretford, Kew Bridge also has a non electrified section (at one time the North London line 4 rail continued to Kew Bridge station (but platforms on those lines now demolished). I need to check but before the Kew Bridge - Gunnersbury spur closed that might also have been electrified.
