Doesn't surprise me, I was in Croydon on a Saturday night recently and couldn't help but notice how many bus routes that would have been busy a few years ago were very quiet, I can only assume there has been a big switch to Uber? Indeed, the days of Friday and Saturday being pub nights are vanishing. Richmond was heaving when I was younger, so much so the last buses on the R70 had to be double decked and were noisy and often boisterous. Not so much now. Massive change in habits at play in many areas of life. If you fancy Uber spotting, Whitechapel seems buzzing with them 24/7 Shoreditch and Bishopsgate is even worse, its Prius city on Friday/Saturday nights.

London Datastore updated with period 6
Bus 162.4m journeys (year to date 1012.6m)
2017 : 166.0m (1033.2m) 2016 : 166.3m (1044.1m) 2015 : 175.0m (1093.5m) 2014 : 176.5m (1081.8m)
So period 6 is roughly 8% less journeys than 3-4 years ago
Whichever way you look at it, bus journeys have fallen since hopper fare came in. But hopper has generally reduced average yield per journey, so fares income fall bigger percentage

London datastore has now been updated with period 7 data (16 Sep - 13 Oct) a period that excludes school holidays
Buses 183.5m journeys (1194.7m year to date)
comparison 2017-18 : 186.9m and 1220.1m 2016-17 : 186.9m and 1231.1m 2015-16 : 190.8m and 1284.3m 2014-15 : 198.8m and 1280.6m 2013-14 : 194.5m and 1268.6m
so bus usage running about 7% lower than few years ago
Across all Tfl modes period 7 is 326.4m journeys (P7 -2017 : 327.2m) this suggests modal switch away from buses

The statistics people have been revised this year's numbers on several modes over recent periods. Almost every prior period adjustment has been downwards with buses being the worst affected. Therefore the running total of year on year decline is getting worse as the year moves on.

London Datastore now has period 9 uploaded (11 Nov-8 Dec)

London Datastore now has period 11 uploaded (6 Jan-2 Feb)
Bus 171.3m journeys (year to date 1867.6m)
2017-18 175.2m & 1902.3m 2016-17 174.4m & 1910.5m 2015-16 179.5m & 1978.7m 2014-15 178.2m & 2001.4m 2013-14 186.6m & 1989.9m

So fares frozen and hopper fares introduced, but usage still falls

Is one bus a journey, or is one hopper trip a journey ... is one fare a journey?

I believe it is a volume count (passenger numbers boarding regardless of how far they travel), TfL used to do a more detailed financial report which showed the average bus fare, was something like 75p (due to proportion being free), but is no longer available during the year, and the revenue by mode is no longer given so can't divide journeys by bus income to work it out. (I think split is in the full year end report as that has tables by operating mode, but that wont be available until about June-July)

Maybe it is just me, but your statement seems a little ambiguous.

London Datastore now has period 12 journeys
Bus 171.6m (2017-18 168.7m) +1.7%
Tube 110.5m (2017-18 105.3m) +4.9% DLR 9.7m (2017-18 9.3m) +4.3% Overground 14.4m (2017-18 14.1m) +2.8% TfL rail 4.4m (2017-18 3.4m) +29.4%
So bus has increased (but no where near as much as other modes) No idea why, possibly as better weather this year, no Beast from the East)
