The demand for casual rail replacement drivers is at an all time high.
HCT Group are now advertising at £18 an hour - pay from start to finish, minimum 6 hours pay.
Go-Ahead are now advertising at £17 an hour - pay from start to finish, minimum 5.5 hours pay.
Abellio are advertising through an agency from £14.25 an hour but that's only the weekend rate - weekday rate is £12.62 - 40 minute meal relief is deducted, minimum 6 hours pay.
Various other operators based in and around London who do National Rail work are also on the lookout for drivers.
It's always worth looking at the small print. Some include holiday pay in the advertised rate. Others don't and will only pay it to you if you know about it and claim it. You also have to watch out for umbrella companies which sap your takings and "self employed" arrangements!

New one on me, a Permanent role, minimum 38 hours per week with something called involuntary overtime, what on earth is involuntary overtime ? Rostered hours, shifts, and overtime I understand. Can someone explain this, or is is simply paid time if delayed returning to sign off point (which in many industries would be flexitime so just offset time on another shift) www.totaljobs.com/job/bus-driver/time-recruitment-job88336033

Sometimes overtime is necessary if the bus has been delayed or broken down. But where there's no involuntary overtime agreement in place, drivers can insist on finishing on time even if that means abandoning an immobile bus or curtailing mid trip at a random stop to run dead to the garage. I take the view that the nature of the job means that a late finish is inevitable sometimes. But at the same time, the company should be accommodating if a driver does express that they need to finish on time.

How bizarre is this? I’ve held my pcv license for 23 years and after having a break for eighteen months have applied to stagecoach London. I have a clean license but need cpc updating and have been told they won’t employ me? If I am a trainee they will spend thousands but not renew my cpc only! Madness when there is a major shortness. I tried but if they don’t want to help existing license holders then they don’t help there shortages.

I just can’t understand it, There is no mention of having a current cpc just a pcv with no more than six points ( I have none) I’ve asked them again and there reply was ‘ you don’t meet our requirements ‘ so much for Sadiq khan supporting drivers. My respect for stagecoach has just gone😡

This position has been advertised 4 or five times this year. I wonder if Abellio are expanding in the rail replacement sector, which will require more controllers or if there's a reason why they can't retain staff?

I know a few of them have taken up other roles in the company on a full time basis. It's a 0 hours contract. Rail replacement labour requirements are volatile in nature. Some days there are three routes on all requiring controllers, others there are none. Regardless, the job requires flexibility - you could be assigned a post anywhere in London depending on what routes are operating. There are also weekday shifts on occasion - Abellio has all of the London Overground night rail work at the moment as well as the Olympia shuttles. As with any shift work there's an imbalance in demand for early and late shifts, especially on weekends. Time tends to go quickly on late shifts as you'll be kept busy.

Sounds like they don't want to put you on top pay, cheaper to pay a couple of grand & have a new driver on the lowest pay. Sad 😔

So... I’ve updated my cpc at my own cost. I have a clean pcv for 23 years and so much experience (not just driving) of tfl operations. The company I was working for has gone into liquidation so there is no point of contact. Stagecoach have said they won’t accept a personal reference by telephone email or letter it HAS to come from the company direct even though it’s not in business!! So basically no further forward. Do these companies actually want to employ anyone???
