All Christmas Day services in the 1970s were straight shift, which explains the hours of operation, so first bus out of the garage was first in, etc etc. LT hated straight shifts, as they didn't get so much work out of the crews, and these were almost the only ones on the network: some of the limited Sat night/Sun morn night services were on the same basis, e.g. at New Cross. I compiled a smattering of these schedules, as they were the easiest for a trainee to do without supervision!

Firstly, I think we need buses only during the daytime, rather than evening and night time. I can see a demand during the day on Christmas Day, not so sure about evening and overnight services.
Frequency wise, little point in hourly, won't do the job. At least half hourly is required, with 15 mins over expected busy parts.
Not sure you need both 13 and 113, 13 should suffice. I am also unsure how many of the solely outer London routes will be that busy. I think 32 should be extended to Victoria to cover for there being no 16. or perhaps a special service to Waterloo and not have the 139.
Also need to cover rest of London.
Finally, perhaps a modest start in terms of number of routes, and then if successful and there is demand, other routes could be run and evening / overnight services. Remember drivers and other staff would need to volunteer, but tat has already been covered.

Well this is fun. Given that this is fantasy I’m surprised by all the normal suggestions. I would trial a handful of super services to check demand ahead of introducing more Christmas services in future. They would serve areas that are quite busy during Christmas day as well as catering for journeys to and from Heathrow. Flat rate fare of £2.50, no hopper fare or Oyster capping applies.
801 - Plumstead Garage to Hayes By Pass via route 53 to Whitehall; then to Piccadilly; then route 94 to Shepherds Bush Green; then route 207 to Hayes By Pass
802 - North Finchley to South Croydon via route 13 to Victoria; then route 2 to West Norwood; then 468 to South Croydon
803 - Romford to Oxford Circus via route 86 to Stratford; then route 25 to Holborn Circus; then via the old 25 routing to Oxford Circus
800 series routes run 8am to 6pm, every 30-60 minutes
105 - Heathrow to Greenford Station - airport operating hours only
140 - Heathrow to Harrow Weald - airport operating hours only
X26 - Heathrow to Croydon - airport operating hours only

I would be tempted though to have numbers that more closely mirror equivalent routes, so that people understand better where they go. So here is how I would amend your proposals: 801 - I'd split this into two routes: 807 Hayes By-Pass to Oxford Circus (possibly Holborn) and 853 Plumstead Common - Oxford Circus. 802 - I'd split this into 813 North Finchley to Victoria, and run the 802 Trafalgar Square - Croydon. 803 - numbered 825, still Romford-Oxford Circus. Four more routes I would add: 809 - Heathrow Airport (Terminal 5) to Aldwych via the same route as the N9. 818 - Harrow and Sudbury to Baker Street and on to Oxford Circus (for connectivity). 829 - Enfield Town and Trafalgar Square 859 - Oxford Circus and Croydon via 159/109 route. To the Airport routes I would add the 490 and U3; I would also have the X26 call at all stops en-route (perhaps renumber it 826).

Are you planning that the 801 and 802 be operated by just the one company in each case and.if so, how do you start/finish buses from each end of the route at roughly the same time? I guess in the case of the 802 it could be a joint Arriva North/South operation.

I don’t see why it couldn’t be run by more than one operator depending on where the drivers would come from (availability) and proximity of the garage to the route.

Nah mate, that totally spoils my fantasy of my family catching one bus from one side of London to the other for Christmas with each other. Fantasy and reality don’t mix.

Just put it all out to tender and obviously dead running to get the service starting at the same time from each end of the route.

Just read somewhere that there is a vintage bus company offering free bus rides in Christmas Day. There’s only one bus in operation, running hourly between Roehampton and Putney Bridge (following the 430) between 09:30 - 15:30. Entirely free and voluntary of course

Yes, that’s the one - didn’t know this was a yearly thing! Thought this was a one/off I think this is just the second year - I can't recall it running before 2017. I assume some people used it last time for them to decide to give it a go a second year. Either that or they just want a reason to "play buses" and avoid the Christmas toil at home!

I would have all routes serving Heathrow running on Christmas Day with an hourly service on most routes, and possibly keep the N9 running throughout the day as no tubes. After that buses serving any other airports open (405 possibly) and also major hospitals. Then to serve places where Christmas is not celebrated so much and the majority of shops open. Staff should be volunteer only, including control staff and engineering support. Night buses to run where nightclubs are open and there is an obvious demand. Also connecting services to hotels from Victoria Coach Station where National Express coaches will be running.

I feel the biggest problem with Christmas day buses is how busy they'd be!
Anyway, my choice would probably be to run every night/24h bus with a weeknight frequency of >30 minutes, along with those serving Heathrow.
