By way of a technicality, there will still be some mini-HSTs with 4 carriages around for local services. I believe there will be 11 in total. I rode one from Exeter St Davids to Plymouth last May. I appreciate that the end is nigh for traditional HSTs on the main line from London Paddington, hence this thread. Yes, shortened ones (known as Castle class) continue on the Cardiff - Bristol - Exeter - Plymouth- Penzance route Just not going to operate into Paddington anymore

Is there a date for it yet as I cannot see one?

@gwrhelp
confirms final HST plans. The 1830 Paddington-Taunton is last official train, while the 1803 Padd-Plymouth, 1815 Padd-Cheltenham 1822 Padd-Hereford will all be HSTs on May 18. There is an extra 1832 IET following the 1830. A special viewing area will also be available

Also from GWR, all passengers must have valid seat reservations too.

From Reading the IET will be the leading Taunton service, so any "real passengers" will be waiting for/ onboard that service.

That's probably a very sensible move - it will keep bona fide travellers away from all the craziness.

So is anyone on here going on the last service? Unfortunately I'm unable to go really wanted to. Nope even though I like HSTs as a train - the prospect of being in a train full of hyperactive train enthusiasts is enough to make me run 100 miles in the other direction. Also given how much stupidity now occurs with photographers trespassing on the railway when anything vaguely special runs I'll be amazed if the train actually runs on time and without incident. And just for the record I hope it passes off without any incident but the omens are not good. I shall have to content myself with a LNER HST ride before they vanish.

I get what your saying and your probably right which is such a shame. The reason I can't go is because I'm going up to Scotland that day so hopefully will get a HST on the East Coast Mainline.

I am not wanting to take this too far off topic, but I feel that those trespassers you are referring to are not 'enthusiasts' but mainly 'normal' people that have been encouraged out to see one steam loco in particular. I would like to think that most 'enthusiasts' understand and respect the rules of the railway. And I feel all this highlights is general disregard for the rules of the railway by large sections of the community. I think it's worth highlighting that most of the individuals involved are not necessarily 'young' but still feel it's okay to do what they did.

So is anyone on here going on the last service? Unfortunately I'm unable to go really wanted to. My last HST trip was, by chance, on 17th May last year. I may go to Penzance station (or, more likely, footpath outside the station) to see the 17.03 last arrival this Friday, the 17th May, but I won't be travelling on it, unless...

I'm hatching a plan to catch that last Penzance one from Truro downwards; if they try to stop me boarding I'll wave my stick and Old Gits' Railcard at them.
