I caught the 9.45ish bus from Hammersmith and had walked around 8 mile yesterday so was pretty sleepy but all of a sudden knowing the route well noticed areas I had not previously seen on route so thought I was on diversion until I spoke to a passenger next to driver giving him instructions where to go. We went over a bridge and came back over it.
I had a 22.46 train booked at Victoria and im just thrilled I gave myself extra time as I got to Victoria coach station after 10.30pm.
I realised when I got off that London United had taken over route but I found that inexcusable. I doubt if I had missed my train London united buses would have paid my fare home which probably had been an extra £31

It happens - buses get lost. I was on a 380 that missed the turn into Charlton Church Street and had to perform a very awkward 10 point turn. And a 108 that missed the turn into Chrisp Street and I had to guide the driver to East India Dock Road.
I don't think any liability is accepted for consequential loss but Customer Services have been known to compensate when a driver messes up. I once complained about a 71 where the driver didn't bother going into the stand at Cromwell Road and sat outside the bus station before leaving. I paid for a taxi to Chessington and TfL reimbursed the cost as Oyster credit. It was a FW operated trip yet the garage denied all knowledge of operating any trips on the 71!

It happened to my driver who was brand new and didn't know the diversion route for the 196 and listening to the idiotic passenger at the front nearly cost him his job until I intervened and told him to turn right just before the low bridge, especially as he passed a TfL low bridge sign as well.

Seems this driver wasn't given adequate route training? I wouldn't have thought that the 211 was a particularly difficult route to memorise? If the driver was stressed they are at greater risk of an accident. If you had missed your train as a result then I think TfL should have reimbursed you and billed RATP.

I never missed my train but it was a close call...I was on 22.46 train to Eastbourne and made with 15 mins to spare but I was late arriving with the bus going all over the shot lol.
Im just saying next train was after 12 and would have set me back a fair few quid.
Driver error would have cost me and what with it being a newly transferred company I would have thought route knowledge was made certain.

I once missed a turn on the Elephant-bound[1] C10 by turning left a junction too early from Buckingham Palace Road. The worst thing was that I realised it just a little bit too late to the point where I couldn't manoeuvre the bus back in the right direction without reversing. Consequently I went around the block and started again at Victoria, apologising to the passengers. Surprisingly no one got angry. [1] - a good number of years before its extension to Canada Water

I route learned the 314 and the first day i was out on it i turned right at the bottom of Hayes high street instead of left. (I went the 119 way) Even though i had learnt the route recently i still messed up. (I was so used to being a passenger on a 119 lol)
Im on the 227 tonight which is a simple route however im scared i will end up on the 358 route by doing a wrong turn

Some mistakes can be costlier than others (leaving aside the obvious risks like bridge strikes etc) - many years ago at Staples Corner one driver took a wrong turn and ended up on the M1. That's a very lengthy detour with no possibility of doing a U-turn or even letting passengers off for many many miles I believe some routes had a stark "DO NOT STRAY ONTO M1" warning added to the duty cards as a result.
I've seen a fair few drivers get lost on scheduled routes - everyone makes mistakes at some point! The oddest included an N98 to Stanmore heading south on Holloway Road, and a 7 to East Acton heading west on Cannon Street (this was when the route started from Russell Square).

When the H12 was just taken over by RATP, a driver heading towards South Harrow turned right at the Hatch End Morrisons roundabout rather than continuing straight. She then had to reverse out of the road, back on to the roundabout, causing one of the upper deck windows to be smashed by a tree in the process.

Imagine how it used to be when routes were longer, often had two or more garages operating them and switched to different garages to operate Saturday and/or Sunday services, sometimes as a variation with a suffix e.g. A, B or C. Schedules got changed at the drop of a hat, too: there's an example on Ian Armstrong's London Bus Routes site of a tram replacement route that had PM supply buses on a Sunday for one whole week(i.e. one day) before it was taken off again, with no reason apparent for the change!

I've previously been on a 171 which was terminated at New Cross Fire Station (the stop outside the garage was closed). Anyhow, he did it by accident because he's used to driving the 36. He's only human after all and we do all make mistakes. I could see a driver turning in the wrong place because they are unfamiliar with the route they are driving when they drive another similar route which they are more familiar
