It's mostly to do with the new signalling apparently.

Most probably the “temporary unavailability “ is caused by the few rostered spare drivers having already being used so no additional cover for short meal reliefs or drivers going over the maximum hours ( short meal relief = late meal relief)

It used to be acceptable to talk about staff sickness, though I know it can be greeted with scepticism by the public sometimes.

There probably isn't one. I just find temporary driver unavailability to be be a strange expression to use, but maybe I'm being too pernickety.

The reasoning is vague - there is nothing stopping them from being a bit more upfront to the fare paying passengers.

I’m not affected by this, but if I was , the statement in the link above would make me quite angry. Frankly, it’s mostly waffle, very poor management speak. Talk of putting extra resources into strategic locations to minimise disruption. And explaining why a “faulty train” is actually a train whose software isn’t talking to the signalling properly. So actually it’s faulty signalling, signal failure.... I guess they don’t want to call it that. So instead, let people think they are riding on faulty trains. Bizarre. And putting extra resources into strategic locations. This could be 100 coaches ready to take commuters from the Chilterns to London in the event of a catastrophic signal failure during a morning peak period. Or , it could be ten extra whiteboards for staff to use at stations to advise the passengers the station is closed, or of delays to the network, and advising them of alternative travel.

Unfortunately, it says "Two software updates are scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2020", the next stage Euston Square-Stepney Green/Monument has been kicked into the long grass, from 22/23 February. Now likely September/October

Software update now “indefinitely delayed while rewritten by Thales”.
