I don’t think this has been tried before. Which currently existing route do we think has the biggest historical footprint? I’ll give you a couple of examples: We all know the 132 is now North Greenwich to Bexleyheath, but in the past it has also run via Danson Road and Crook Log, and has run north of Bexleyheath to both Slade Green via current 89, and to Woolwich via the 229 to Abbey Wood and 180 to Woolwich. That’s a pretty big print. The 229 similarly has run out to Woolwich in a similar direction, has covered all sorts of routes between Bexleyheath and Sidcup, via the current 269 and also via Elmwood Drive and Murchison Avenue before rejoining the current 269. It has also headed a long way south to St Paul’s Cray, Orpington and Farnborough. Over to you! Have fun  |

A few off the top of my head......
12 South Croydon to Harlesden
50 Addiscombe to Embankment
69 North Woolwich to Chingford
141 Wood Green to Grove Park
The 229/269 history is quite interesting, the 269 started as an OPO conversion of the northern end of the 229 but numerous changes later and the routes have effectively swapped ends.

Possibly more in the way of 'shifting' routes these, but the way in which the 21 has moved from having West Kingsdown to Moorgate journeys to the planned Lewisham to Holloway service and the 5 from East Ham to Waterloo to being Romford to Canning Town occur to me.

111 - originally ran Cranford to Hammersmith. (Hammersmith Sun only - terminated at Hanworth Mon to Sat)
In 64 was rerouted to Kingston Saturday only, later cut back then reinstated there.

The 170 has covered a lot of ground. It was inaugurated as a tram replacement route in 1950, running from Wandsworth to Hackney. It was extended to Leyton, Downsell Road in April 1959 as part of the Trolleybus Replacement Programme. The route was then gradually whittled away at its eastern end and by the end of 1969 it was a Wandsworth-Bloomsbury route, extended at peak times to Shoreditch. The route's eastern extension to Roehampton, Danebury Avenue occurred in April 1981 and that terminus has at least remained consistent.
The route assumed its Roehampton-Clapham Junction form in May 1991 when it was converted to midibus, and remained in this form for several years although the vehicles grew gradually larger. It assumed its current form in February 2008 when it was extended over route 239 to Victoria. The only section of the original 1950 route that is still served is the short section from Wandsworth Town Centre to Clapham Junction.

I wonder whether that was why when the 375 was introduced it was numbered that to reminisce the days of the 175 running through Passingford Bridge up to Stapleford Aerodrome. |

The 134 has covered from Potters Bar Station to Pimlico.
The 29 has also operated from Victoria to South Mimms and also had journeys extending to Borhamwood. That said, the route usually ran in overlapping sections with very few journeys covering the full route.
The 279 has run from Smithfield to Hammond Street and for a short while in the 1970s had a Sunday extension to Liverpool Street.
The 52 once had journeys that reached Borehamwood, Rossington Avenue.

The 80 has been out as far as Lower Kingswood and in as far as Putney Bridge with only Sutton Green to Sutton Station the original section that survived.

The 59 in its various forms along the A23 corridor, once the famous Sunday only route from West Hampstead to Chipstead Valley and later rerouted to Old Coulsdon, then Farringdon Street and then Kings Cross in it's next life before being cut back to Euston a few years ago.
