Following Greater Manchester's lead, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is looking at introducing bus franchising throughout its area. Members of the LCRCA will be asked on 3rd March to approve elements of the process, including a formal proposed franchising scheme. If the decision is made to proceed, the findings of a consultation on franchising will be released, with a final decison on whether to proceed likely before the end of 2023. Franchising would take place in five stages, with the first routes in St Helens operating from September 2026. Franchsing would then be rolled out to The Wirral; North Liverpool & North Knowsley; South Liverpool, South Knowsley & Halton; and finally Sefton. There would only be 2 operators for the large franchises - Arriva and Stagecoach - unless any new players feel able to buy into the area.

Stagecoach has already started its preparations. Stagecoach Manchester's Managing Director, Lee Wasnidge, has been appointed to a new role, Managing Director - Franchising Mobilisation. As well as mobilising resources for the second tranche of Manchester franchising, for which Stagecoach is the lead operator, part of his role is to "develop a blueprint and collaboration for future franchising". No doubt Stagecoach had one eye on the likelihood of franchising being announced for the Liverpool City Region, where Stagecoach has a large presence. It will be interesting to see how cross-boundary routes operating between Greater Manchester and Liverpool City Region are treated - will there be joint franchising, will one Authority be the lead franchiser, or will it be decided on a route-by-route basis? |

A small gripe I know, but I do wish Merseyside hadn’t chosen a yellow livery as well as Manchester. When there are so many colours to pick, why have two yellow counties one next to the other?

Maybe yellow has a link to Merseyside? MerseyRail has used yellow for many years but the traditional bus/tram colour was green. |

And yellow is generally synonymous with school buses. Try telling Stagecoach that! They replaced their Gold livery for premium services with a yellow-based livery that looks horrible. Mind you the whole Stagecoach rebranding is a dog's dinner. |

The City Coat of Arms adopted in 1842 featured seven bees, to represent both the City's industry and its trade across the seven seas. You will see bee symbols everywhere in Manchester and they reflect a city built on hard work, not royal patronage or easy natural resources. |

But bees are not the insipid yellow of the buses, they're more amber. I'm with vjaska on this, though a deeper 'oreangey' yellow would have been OK. |
