I often travel from Wimbledon to Acton Town (via Earls Ct) and purchase a Wimbledon - Zone 23 ticket. At Acton, the gate gives me the outward portion back even though I have finished with it. My theory is that Acton Tn is not the last stn in Zone 3 in this area. If I was to go on to Park Royal say (last stn in Zone 3) the gate would probably keep it.
However the theory doesn't necessarily work elsewhere on the system. Any clues?

::)FARE DODGER!!!!!!!!!! It used to be possible to use a newsagent bought On Day Travelcard for as many days as you liked. The magnetic strip on the back contained the information to open the gate and the zones but not the date. They used to be very popular around Brixton, Stockwell and Clapham. I was once flashed (oooo-er-missus, ere no stop messin` around!!) with a pass that turned out to be a year out of date but the bloke swore blind he had come thru the barrier at Brixton Stn. Revenue took the pass down the station and it worked.

When originally sold at Newsagents, they had no means of electronically dating the tickets, so it was electronically dated when it was used on the Underground through the UTS gates, this meant that if a punter used the buses a lot, the ticket was not electronically dated and could in theory be still valid through a UTS gate a year after sale. This is not possible now due to the EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) machines and the new Oyster card technology.
As for Acton Town, the gate should retain all single and reurn tickets, the only gates that give back tickets are at BR interchange stations where the ticket would be valid for onwards journeys by over ground services.
I'll ask my ex Revenue Protection colleagues to check the UTS gates at Acton Town.

Because Simon, as I said earlier , the tickets are often valid for onwards travel by National Rail. Customers would be very put out if the LUL gates retained their return tickets to Glasgow just because the LUL part of the travel paid for was completed. Exit gates are only programmed to retain single LUL tickets and used LUL return tickets. They do not retain travelcards, passes or National Rail tickets

Thanks Brian. Perhaps I ought to mention that I'm not into re-using LUL/BR/NR tickets as I used to work (for BR) alongside the ticket irregularities section. The gates I must say seem cleverly programmed to recognise certain locations, e.g. Kings Cross where one has to go out and back in again to inter-change between Met/Circle and Piccadilly line say.
In similar vein, is a Croydon to Zone 1 return ticket available for termination of the return LUL journey short of Victoria (eg at Green Park) with the return Nat Rlys leg still valid for use?

As far as I am aware if you have a NR Croydon to R1 or Zone 1 return it is available for that journey only and has no LUL usage. It simply allows you to pass through zone 1 on the inwards and outwards journey. If you have a Croydon to London AND zone 1 return that entitles you to a a return journey (two point to point journeys in Zone 1) on LUL . On completion of that journey the gate will not retain the ticket, however if another journey is attempted the LUL entry gate will refuse access. A lot of people think that the Zone 1 part is like a zone 1 travel card and it isn't. Brian

Thanks Highbayman. I'm aware that LUL Zonal day tickets (point to point) are not valid for break of journey intermediately.

Do the gates at Hammersmith/ Paddington/ Kings Cross (i.e. where there are separate gates for separate lines) eat up single tickets when you pass through the first gate, or do the gates always return your single ticket?

To answer your question, the gates at stations like Paddington and Kings Cross will give back all NR tickets, they do not give back all LUL singles at Paddington or Victoria as there is no need to exit the station to catch another LUL train. I believe that singles are returned at Kings Cross and at Hammersmith, where exit via a set of gates is necessary to change trains. Oh and the reason why Roofbox's ticket keeps getting returned at Acton Town is because Wimbledon is a NR station and he has a NR issued ticket.

So, would a Wimbledon to Zone 23 ticket (outward portion) be returned at Park Royal or any other 'last' station in Zone 3 ?

The more I think about this, I cannot think of any reason why a single NR issued ticket to U2-3 should be returned at any LUL staion apart from the few with gate controlled interchanges like Kings X, So I have asked a man who willl know.

Thanks for all the input.
I'd be interested to learn whether other readers find their through NR/LUL tickets (single or outward portion of returns) returned by the gates when they should be retained, e.g. Raynes Park to Zone 1 at Euston or Dartford to Zone 1 at Earls Court.
