A stock is limited to 50mph - due to its bogies and the state of the track. 1992 stock is now limited to 85 kph because of Chancery Lane. As I'm poor at maths, what is 85kph in mph please? It's roughly 52.82, so really around 53mph. BTW maths isn't my strong point either so I cheated ;D www.calculateme.com/Length/Kilometers/ToMiles.htm

A Stocks can do 70mph, but are limited to 60mph, and a 1992 stock on the central line can do 60mph, they do that on stretches on the central line, but they do mostly 50mph between short stations as they accelerate and decelerate very quickly. If you read the above posts you'll see that A-stock is limited to 50mph, not 60mph. The current 50mph limit on A stock is due to saving maintenance money pending introduction of S stock. Basically they are not maintained in a condition that allows them to operate safely at that speed anymore. Some parts are overdue for replacement and the lower speed reduces the stresses and strains on the bogies when the ride over poorer track. Chiltern line trains can go faster on same track, so track condition isn't the liiting factor. You are correct the top speed was 70mph a few years ago, and some sections of line were passed for that speed. Central line top speed is in km/h and the ATO (automatic train operation which drives the train) has limits in km/h. The lowest is 20km/h (about 13mph) which is why one came off the track running through a temporary 10mph restriction near White City a few years ago I understand the S stock will have a top speed of 100km/h (about 62mph)
