The trains on these two lines look practically identical to an every day Joe like me. My question is this:
1) Why do the Jubile Line trains accelerate faster than the Northern Line version when leaving the platform? (Central Line trains are just as quick off the mark as the Jubilee).
1A)Is it something to do with the Northern Line trains being restricted to 60% power? If so why is that? (old signalling?)
2) Why do the Jubilee Line trains make that roaring noise when moving off, yet the Northern Line trains are almost as quiet as a mouse?

[/quote] they are slightly faster, but they may seem faster as they have their power at higher than 62% but still not at the maximum. The Jubilee and the Northern both have conventional signalling. The Northern will be ATO by 2014 and the Jubilee by the end of this year potentially. Hence the extra trains that were delivered during the 7-car project. The Jubilee will have moving block signalling, like the DLR, which was planned for the extension opening. They had to use reconditioned parts from the Central Line re-signalling because the technology wasn't advanced enough. The Jubilee line 96ts (although they are older) have GTO-gate thyristor traction (like the Networker Trains on NR (class 365, 465) so make the 'gear change' sound as the resistances change. The 95ts (Northern Line) have IGBT traction which is a more modern system as the Jubilee train design was 'frozen' much earlier than the 95ts.

From what I hear the 96ts's design was frozen back in 1991 or thereabouts, so its traction system would have been dated from then.

The 1996ts has the same window profile as the 1983 tube stock that formally ran on the Jubilee Line. It was thought they would keep it and add 1996ts and run them both at the same time. This didn't happen though, so the 1995/6 stock are left with the small windows unlike the Central with the large windows.
The 96ts are derated further because the extra carriage is a trailer car - so doesn't add tractive effort.
