Thousands hit by Dublin Bus picket
Monday, 12 November 2007 08:54
An industrial dispute at Dublin Bus will disrupt dozens of routes and force thousands of commuters to make alternative travel arrangements today.
An official picket is in place at the Harristown Bus depot in Dublin with over 100 drivers on the picket line.
Just one bus on the 4a Ballymun to Stradbrook route passed the picket just after 6am.
Dublin Bus say no services will operate today out of Harristown and it regrets any inconvenience to passengers.
Services to Finglas, Blanchardstown, Ballymun and Swords are likely to be worst hit.
Other areas affected include Donabate, Portrane, Dunboyne, Littlepace, Tyrrelstown, Damastown, Portmarnock, Kinsealy and Kilmore.
At 5.30am a female driver was given a work board which rostered her for the 4A route. This is one of the two routes at the centre of this dispute.
She refused to drive the route and was immediately suspended.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, Michael Faherty, General Secretary of the National Bus and Rail Union, warned that the dispute might spread to other areas.
'If this issue is not resolved, either today or tomorrow, people will get so frustrated. Unofficial pickets could be mounted in other depots.'
'That would be a most regrettable development but it's always a possibility', he said.
According to Dublin Bus the following routes have no service:
4, 13, 13a, 17a, 27b, 33b, 37x, 39x, 39b, 40, 40a, 40b, 40c, 40d, 70x, 83, 102, 105, 127, 129, 142, 230, 237, 238, 239.
There is limited service on routes 27x, 37, 38/a, 38c, 39, 41, 41c, 41x, 43, 70/a, 270.
All other services are operating as normal.
