This is route [long drawn out pause] 243 [another long drawn out pause] to [yup, another looooong pause] Wood Green. It doesn't get on your nerves already does it? ;D Stuart. A sign of how bad putting speech through a computer can be. You'd think that they would get a system that can handle it a little better than that. My dad lived in Germany for a while and when I used buses out there they had a system that told you the next stop WITHOUT the pauses. It actually worked in real time.... The next stop announcment on Arriva KT's Fastrack buses works perfectly no pauses and in real time stop for stop (it does make the odd mistake telling you the next stop is Gravesend Asda as you come out of Dartford town center)

I experienced it last weekend: "Route 168.... to.... Hampstead Heath." My first impressions of the system are both useful and irritating. Whilst it's nice to know what the route's next stop will be (ideal if you've had a few on a late night), the constant announcement of the route's final destination did get on my nerves after a while.

Yesterday, my second bus, the iBus stuck on the first bus stop, but announced two stops ahead. All the way to Waterloo, two stops ahead, one stop ahead, no announcement, or one stop behind (and this was at the stop, not in advance). Also, no "Route 76" etc. - just the wrong stop name. Plus, it was warning me of low bridge, very close BEHIND! Coming back, it announced each stop correctly until I passed a request stop. After that, it was one stop behind to the end. What was worse, it would not let me switch off. And returning to Tottenham today, it gave me "Route 76 to Waterloo" - it got switched off this time.

Just to let you know that the first WN vehicles to be fitted with iBus will be the route 29 Arctics.
All route 29 MA conversions to iBus will be done at WN garage during the day and Siemens hope to complete 4 MA's per day starting on Monday 6th August.
Stuart.

Training ? Why would drivers need training. The system is supposed to be automatic. If its not it will not be lot of good Well, whether training is needed or not, we're getting an hour and a half's worth (at overtime rate naturally ;D), and the classroom is the top deck of M1084. An hour an a half at OT rate? I cant see PB standing for that. A minimum £100 at least. ;D Time will tell, but PB have taken over from HT as being a very millitent garage. When I first started working for London Buses / LT at MH, HT was a notorious millitent garage and PB were soft as tissue. Not so these days, PB will walk out at the drop of a hat

I know Norwood's hosting the conversion of buses, but none of them seem to be for depots in South London.

AVs (ex S) VA295 (SK52MPU) has had displays instaled and is the first bus at AV to have this work done.

Ah the delights of modern technology.... there's always going to be bugs somewhere down the line. This system seems to be more gimmicks then of any real use. I should imagine most people will rapidly get fed up with constant unnecessary announcements particularly when with most of these systems TfL come up with it does not work properly. A display on the bus that shows the next stop is perfectly adequate. Most passengers would be far more interested in a system that enables them to find out when there bus will turn up. Displays at bus stops are of some use but are far from ideal. It is also an expensive way to do things. What people really want to do is to say to use their mobile or office phone to find out when their bust will turn up at the stop rather then go to the stop and find its running 20 minutes late. TfL have never really got to grip with this sort of technology they must have had at lease several attempts and all have been a failure.

This is my 1st post in the Ibus thread! So as far as I have read, it is a machine, like the try-outs, which was on Route 149 in 2005/6, but now on every bus!!
1.) Doesn't the timetable/ journey time increase? 2.) How can it operate on backstreet bus routes like 484, when bus stops are close? 3.) How does it sound? What are the lines in the ibus for bus routes? (other words, what does it include?)

3.) How does it sound? What are the lines in the ibus for bus routes? (other words, what does it include?) It... sounds... very annoying... travelling more...than a few stops on... Route... 243... ;D It can be handy if you're new to an area and are looking for a specific stop along the way but it is very wearing if you are travelling a long distance (i.e Bruce Grove to Theobald's Road). Thankfully, some drivers turn the sound off but you can still see the information on the screen. It also tells drivers warnings of low bridges along the way (warning... low.. bridge... to your right... at Sperling... Road), but sometimes as a passenger we hear these messages as well It can be too much to hear after a long day's work... I don't know how the drivers manage to put up with it... I never hear it working on the W4 or 318 though... I guess it depends where the beacons are fitted along the route. I guess it means the 318's now have a fancier 'bus stopping' sign than before and that's it ;D

I guess it means the 318's now have a fancier 'bus stopping' sign than before and that's it ;D OH! I am sorry to hear that mate! I travel long journeys usually before I left London in August 2006 to come to Jamaica until July 2008 for a student foreign exchnage trip! This is what I would do every Weekday (18:00 - 23:00): Central Line to Stratford and change for the Jubbile Line to Canada Water and C10 to Victoria or either Central Line to Oxford Circus Victoria Line to Victoria Hang by 73 stand for 2/3hrs, taking pics of buses 73 to Seven Sisters Station ( usually sometimes get a drop to Tottenham Hale if going back to Lea Valley or to Tottenham Swan by a lovely bus driver! 230 to Saint James Street Station or Victoria Line to Walthamstow Central and 20/ 275, if on 275 to Snakes Lane East. If on 20 to the Castle and cycle down I would usually do every weekend or week, if I am on holdiay! (Usually includes talking the Underground or overhead during interchanges, but it is not in this list order, but the direction is the same eg, from Stratford - Lewisham!) 108: Stratford - Lewisham 181: Lewisham - Grove Park 273: Lewisham - Petts Wood 208: Petts Wood - Lewisham 225: Hither Green - Canada Water 36/185/436: Camberwell - Victoria C10: Canada Water - Victoria 507: Victoria - Waterloo 521: Waterloo - London Bridge 275: Snakes Lane East - Woodford (every day) 73: Victoria - Seven Sisters (every day) 484: Lewisham - Camberwell 230: Tottenham Swan - Saint James St/ Walthamstow (connect with 275) 20: Walthamstow Central - Woodford Castle (only if I miss 02, 42 past 275 bus from the Bus Station so I can take 15 or 45 past 20 bus instead and ride down Snakes Lane East and West on my scooter, the push one) X26: East Croydon - Heathrow 239: Victoria - Clapham Junction 25: Oxford Circus - Stratford 397: Debden - South Chingford 34: Walthamstow - Edmonton or to Barnet Church 142: Brent Cross - Watford During the night: ( 3 nights per wk) N55: Woodford Castle - Wanstead N8: Wanstead - Stratford 108: Stratford - Lewisham N21/ N36: Lewisham - New Cross 453: New Cross - Oxford Circus 25: Oxford Circus - Ilford 25: Ilford - Stratford N8: Stratford - Wanstead N55: Wanstead - Woodford Wells Do you think I can manage the Ibus on all of these routes lol???

The London iBus is very annoying. The voice is patronising and the pauses just does me 'ead in.
The Startrak system used on Trent Barton's buses is a lot better. The tone is more natural and there aren't annoying pauses.
Talking about pauses, there are instances when they are needed, for example, Stoke Newington High Street. I'd be inclined to put in a pause before High Street.
The repeated 'route 41 ... to ... Archway' is a bit too much IMO - that's one line that isn't needed. Also, rather than announcing stops upon arrival, they should announce 'next stop...' upon departure.
