I believe Feltham Area Signalling Centre may close after the works, as control for all lines go to Basingstoke ROC.

Been informed that SWR are down to 8 class 707s, with the remaining units set to leave by November. They should all be gone from SWR by late October, will be joining others on South Eastern SWR are using more of the 458s as replacements for 707s, as the plan to convert 28 class 458 units to 4car 100mph with 2+2 seating for Portsmouth line seems to have been put on hold with only 3 or 4 units definitely going ahead. Latest ORR data shows SWR only operating 78% of pre pandemic vehicle Km (table 5.1), so lost nearly quarter of their capacity dataportal.orr.gov.uk/media/2207/passenger-rail-usage-jan-mar-2023.pdf

If anything, the refurbs and reforms of the 458s into 4-car units are progressing more quickly than I expected. Whether they actually enter service is still debated. Think class 442. Staff training is another matter. Drivers / guards will require a short conversion course as the traction is similar but will perform differently. Re-set for 100mph and with four not five cars per unit. Station and depot staff on the main lines are unfamiliar with the type which has hitherto been restricted to the suburban area and mostly to Windsor Lines services. 458/5s are currently diagrammed for some of the heavier-loading main suburban diagrams, returning these to 10-car operations, which takes them to Hampton Court, Dorking and Guildford in addition to duties on the Shepperton line replacing 707s coach-for-coach. They also appear on the Kingston "rounders" at times. Rolling stock rosters can change without notice so as 458/5s are taken out of traffic for conversion to 458/4s expect these workings to change. The problem then for SWR is how to provide the 10-car trains these services need. As in pre-Covid days it is now not possible to board the first train to arrive at stations Raynes Park to Clapham Junction in the morning peak. 10-car trains are mostly reduced to 8-car following the withdrawal of the 456s and the peak-hour extras which were suspended for Covid have not returned and are not likely to do so. In other news the final stock transfer of 707s to South Eastern was to have taken place early tomorrow morning (00.09 Waterloo - Grove Park via Linford Street and Brixton) but has been cancelled for a reason not known to me. This would have eliminated the type from SWR but they have already ceased running in traffic.

I am advised that the bridge at Guildford is / was a Public Right of Way. This arose from the construction of the station severing a long-standing way. There have been antisocial issues at Guildford which cannot be accepted but before a PROW is closed there is a legal process and the fact must be advertised with the alternative route displayed. Many year ago the passimeter ticket office at Worthing station (north side at the car park entrance) was removed in a de-staffing exercise and alterations made to platform access routes. This had the incidental effect of creating an "open" subway between north and south sides of the station which was divided by a fence preventing free-for-all access to trains and which became popular with local people as it avoided the need to walk around and (often) wait at the South Farm Road level crossing. During NSE days a barrier was installed in the subway and the dividing fence removed. This effectively closed the subway as a route across the railway. Local opposition to the loss of a then-established route across the railway was vociferous. As a stop-gap it was possible to request a "subway pass" from gateline staff which allowed you through and which was collected at the other end. Any handy used ticket was used; there were no special issues printed. Complaints still arise frequently about the delays to pedestrians crossing at South Farm Road. Since resignalling this has come under the remote (cctv) control of Lancing box and will be moved to Three Bridges sometime soon. Barriers are now lowered a least five minutes before a train passes which causes extensive road traffic delays. The other option, via Broadwater Road bridge, is very much longer. It would be possible to reinstate the earlier arrangements with a divided subway.

SWR took a battering from Storm Henk. At least seven lines blocked by fallen trees. One house roof on the railway. Other miscellaneous and shorter-term blockages. Some lines are still out of service awaiting inspection in the light of day including the Dwon Main through Surbiton. It's not been an easy day. The only safe option was to suspend all services over a wide area.

I've worked the gateline at Guildford in the past and it's a bit suspicious how many people ask to cross the bridge lol. Nothing we at the gates can do as we have to open it
