Does anyone think graffiti is common or less common than it was in the past, say the 80s/90s. Alot of old photos of the tubes from around this era that i have seen are covered in graffiti (tbh having silver all over trains was a stupid idea as it was a blank canvas). Nowadays, I very rarely see any of the allover 'tags' which cover basically the whole carraige. (Of course the smaller graffiti inside the train is common anywhere in the world) Have I just been very lucky not to come across a graffiti covered train?? Or has LU cracked down on graffiti as well as security with better fencing and CCTV etc.? Ive heard that any trains covered with graffiti are instantly washed at night nowadays or not sent out the next day. I think is a waste of time spending money on spray paint, then risk death and being arrested to vandalise a train which will probably just be cleaned off the next week or so..but there we go. I came across this website with hundreds of pictures of graffiti covered trains. Unfortunatly, this website seems to glamorise the subject and is pretty depressing It interested me because i love the history of the Tube... www.rockingthecity.com/

i think the solution to the problems is better lighting. If more areas of the underground were brightly lit it may put graffiti artists off and its likely more people will spot the person commiting the crime.
More CCTV needs to be installed around the hotspots and the Underground trains themselves need CCTV installed on the interior and exterior of the trains!.

Graffiti artists couldn't care less if a place is well lit or even if it has CCTV around, they will still carry out their mindless acts.

Tube trains already have CCTV installed in their interior; on the Northern and Jubilee's stock they are fitted discreetly above the emergency doors at the end of each carriage. But as Luke says this doesn't seem to deter vandals from doing what they do I remember one case a few years ago (2002 I think) where some guy spent months etching the windows on every Northern Line train. On one occasion he saw the CCTV, went up to it and started posing for the camera i think the solution to the problems is better lighting. Graffiti in Brixton is just as common as rape, muggings, assaults etc. The reason is partly due to the fact that Brixton has a Graffiti shop and also that many people who have gone around vandalising public transport actually live or lived in Brixton or other parts of Lambeth.

And by way of a link to graffiti and Brixton, here is a Brixton Garage bus with graffiti out in service on the 159 in 2004. www.rm5chris.fotopic.net/p60347799.html...what a disgrace

The Gold RM (either RM5 or 6) had 'Tox 04' on the side for ages after it was done in 2004. The guy who done it eventually ended up in prison when he was caught defacing Gloucester Road Station. Also, Brixton Garage was broken into not long after the 55 reg VLA's were delivered with many being vandalised on the offside. Not a nice sight .

Must have been RM6 - RM5 has always been red and at that time was safely looked after/guarded by Tottenham. I do recall seeing another BN RM with TOX0x scralled right aboive one of the front windows. I do remeber seeing a program about when they got Mr Tox as you used to see his tags everywhere - I saw a TOX09 te other day but I suppose others could now be using/copying his 'tag'

LU now take the policy that if a train is vandalised above the bogies it will not be allowed in service, unless it is totally unavoidable.
Apart from the C stock, because they are short enough as it is and if they took out the vandalised ones there would be no service whatsoever ;D

Ive heard that any trains covered with graffiti are instantly washed at night nowadays or not sent out the next day. Surely not the case with buses. I remember this turn up on the 119 in croydon back in 2007, gave me a shock. ;D - jimmyshengukbuses2.fotopic.net/p37534232.html
