They still make trams including the Flexity Swift which is what the current London trams are based on. The problem however is like most cities the tram had been customised to suit local specifications. The problem of course is to make a small number of the same model several years later would have been very expensive and would have lead to differences anyway. So London went for the cheaper option of piggybacking an order from another city.
Now what is interesting however is both the old and new trams share a common heritage. Both can trace their origins back to ABB, which was later purchaased by Adtranz. Bombarider then brought out Adtranz and took on both the Flexity and Variotram products. They then sold the Variotram design to Stadler who have continued to develop the design into what London has now purchased.

(Not sure if I'm alllowed to do this, but) I posted this on Skyscrapercity a couple days ago. "I was lucky to catch some driver training for the new Stadler trams. Was told by a member of staff on board, there's a new route 4, Elmers End - Therapia Lane being introduced for the trams to work on (assuming the Therapia Lane terminus may be for operational purposes)."www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=92811610&postcount=147(I can retype the post if necessary)

I will definately have to hitch a ride on them. Nic pics 'TR'

TfL bought out the private sector concession for Tramlink which makes TfL responsible for the infrastructure, the trams and the depot. However First Tram Operations are still contracted to actually run the service and maintain the trams at Therapia Lane. It's a slightly different model from what happens with buses, Overground and DLR where there are contracted operations but the ownership models are all a bit different from each other. It's quite hard to find any evidence that First still run the trams but there are some limited references in the First Group Annual Report.

Tramlink isn't as good under TfL

Tramlink isn't as good under TfL You keep making critical statements like this but never explain why you think what you say. It's really not very helpful to the debate to just keep making these "one liner" comments. TfL have spent a small fortune on buying new trams, relaying loads of worn out track and is spending more to add capacity to the Wimbledon line to allow more trams to run. I am very doubtful that a private sector Tramlink would have spent this money given it was in dispute with TfL over the imposition of the bus flat fare charging regime as it meant it would earn less money than expected.

TBH, Tramlink hasn't been that different before & after TfL took over. The service is generally very good.

I don't use Tramlink that often but it always seems to run reliably and frequently and is well used. Nearly all of the problems it has are the results of motorists crashing into trams, driving on to tram tracks or else the weather which has blown down trees, flooded the tracks or blown the wires down. Services are usually restored pretty quickly. I don't see how TfL can be responsible for car drivers or the weather!

8 years, there was 2 derailments. In 6 years there has been 2 derailments. As a born and bred Croydoner, Tramlink was better pre TfL.
