I have a question about using Oysters on the underground, overground and national rail services. Say I wanted to get a Chiltern Railways service (not sure they use oysters now, but will do by 2nd Jan if they dont already) from Marylebone to Amersham, then the Metropolitian back to London.
This means I would have already touched in at Marylebone, and if a ticket inspector checks my Oyster on the train back to London, it would just show up as touched in at Marylebone. My question is, would they think I am trying to get a free ride, rather than just having a train ride? Also, is it actually allowed?

I assume you mean pay as you go and not travelcard If you touched out at Amersham, it would treat it as whole journeys, if you didn't oyster would probably not know your routing, so would charge you maximum for a possible journey, eg via Harrow or zone 6. Amersham is outside zone 6, if an inspector caught you on outward journey, there is no problem as your destination is beyond, and you could touch out at Amersham. If you got checked part way back with previous touch being marylebone, you will have to do some explaining. I think if you touched out and in (allowing the usual 30 seconds to avoid double touch) at Amersham your 2 fares would be capped at day travelcard rate.

Thats another thing, how does the travelcard on Oyster work? Usually I am well educated about the London Underground system, but I cant seem to work this out. ;D

Well if you ask at an Oyster retailing outlet for any form of prepaid ticket, such as an all-zones travelcard, it will be loaded on there immediately and allow the same amount of travel as a paper version.
In the case of capping of PAYG, I don't know the fares so shall make some examples up. Say a zone 1 & 2 travelcard is £5. A single journey from Zone 2 to Amersham is £2.50. An all zones including A-D or whatever they're called now is £8. If you travel about in zones 1&2 you will have a maximum of £5 deducted from your balance however many journeys you make. If you then travel from zone 2 to Amersham and disappear into the ether you will have a further £2.50 deducted. (Total cost £7.50)
If you then travel back into zones 1&2 you will have an extra 50p deducted.
All of the above is subject to you touching in and out correctly at every terminus or interchange point (if required due to separate stations etc eg Edgware Road, West Hampstead) whether there are gates or not.
Or wasn't that what you were asking?

When you get to Amersham touch out and then touch back in again otherwise you will be charged 2 x incomplete journey's which can now cost £6 a time so £12 the one day travelcard is not loaded onto an oystercard it just stops taking prepay once you reach the capping rate but incomplete journey charges are not included in this total

i have a q about some think i want to top my card up online but it saying Please note that you must activate your purchase as part of a normal journey. To activate you must touch your Oyster card on the yellow reader at your nominated station, and also touch out on the yellow reader at the end of your journey. If you fail to make a normal journey (usual fares & ticketing rates apply), you will be charged a maximum cash fare. but i don't use the tube when i go to london i only use the bus

Then you can't top up your card online using that method. What you could do is enable "auto top-up" and then if your balance goes underneath £4 it'll charge £20 or £40 to your credit/debit card. Auto top-up does work on buses, ***but the first time has to be activated at a tube station***
The only other way you'd get top up onto your card would be a Ticket Stop, i.e. a newsagent/corner shop with Oyster facilities.

The thing being is, do you feel luck punk, well do you? ;D Now the one day TC is the same cost as Oyster capping, a massive suggestion for those looking to "enjoy" the journey, buy yourself a paper ODTC and leave the PAYG for the normal journeys.
