These days even at school times the 10.2m just about cope. If by 'cope' you mean I'm squashed against the windows like those old Garfield toys with suckers on their feet that you used to see on car windows, then yes, 10.2m single deckers cope on the 178 Love the analogy with Garfield toys ;D ;D ;D It's interesting that someone said this option is fastest - the usual TfL approach to changes is to speed things up even if this means passengers have to walk further than before. What I find odd about this consultation is that TfL do not seem to be saying that once the new road layout is determined that they would consider rerouting services to provide convenient access. This is a "once and for all" change that saves TfL money but provides a less convenient service. The text of the consultation document says 4 new stops would be added but the map only shows 2! How are people to comment properly if the document is not correct?

I gatehr youre referring to the 178? The ECW olympians were roughly the same height as a titan or thereabouts (Titans IIRC were signed as 14'7). But back then when the 178 ran Thamesmead East - Lewisham, it ran directly via Kidbrooke park road and not via the estate, the B16 was the only route to serve the estate.
When the 178 was cut in two by the weight limit being imposed on the Bridge, a new route, the 278 was introduced to cover the Kidbrooke - Lewisham leg, this route looped the Ferrier estate together with the B16 whilst the 178 terminated on the other side of the railway. At the same time the 178 was cut back to opwrate Woolwich to Kidbrooke. It was when the dispensation for Buses and subsequent 'bus gates' were installed that the 178 was re-instated to Lewisham, via the 278's routing which meant the Ferrier loop was to be served as it is now. At the same time the B16 was extended from the loop to the station, utilising the Henleys Cross bus stands that the 178 used to use.
In effect the 178 will be going back to its old routing with these changes.

It's empty during the day!

Personally (and I have submitted this) I'd swap the plans around.
Send the 178 via Weigall Road and the B16 via Kidbrooke Park Road, thus negating the traffic congestion between Kidbrooke Park Road and Weigall Road which if you went with TfL's plan would impact BOTH routes, eliminating this would improve the reliability of both routes.

284 to Blackheath, lol not required. MB have done a lot to make that service better an extension will ruin it!

The turn into/out of Weigall Road could be resolved with a little bit of a junction change and maybe a set of lights. To me it's nonsense to send both routes through the traffic when you can avoid it...but hey what do I know I'm only a bus driver

Copy email received from TfL (As I responded to the original consultation) Also been confirmed they have dropped the proposal to take the B16 down Eltham Road to turn into Weigall.
Dear Sir/Madam
Bus routes 178 & B16
We consulted during June and December 2012 on proposals to re-route the 178 and B16 bus services. Changes are necessary since the new road layouts agreed as part of the planning permission for Kidbrooke Village will not permit these services to continue on their current routes. In particular the underpass that joins Tudway Road and Moorehead Way will no longer exist.
Having considered all the responses and following TfL’s extensive discussions with local residents we have decided to implement the changes described below.
Route 178 will serve Kidbrooke Park Road as originally proposed in the first consultation undertaken in June 2012. There will be three additional stops in the following locations:
· Northbound – opposite the junction with Cambert Way · Northbound – north of the junction with Weigall Road · Southbound – north of the junction with Weigall Road
For route B16, we conducted a second consultation in December 2012 as residents on the Casterbridge and Brooklands Park estates had raised concerns about walking distances to Kidbrooke Park Road under the original plans. The proposal was for the B16 to serve Eltham Road and the full length of Weigall Road. However residents remained concerned.
We therefore discussed a new option with the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Berkeley Homes. They agreed to install a turning circle on Moorehead Way close to Wingfield School. The B16 will thus be able to enter Weigall Road from Kidbrooke Park Road and then run along Moorehead Way as far as the turning circle, returning to Kidbrooke Park Road via Moorehead Way and Weigall Road.
It is envisaged that this arrangement can continue for about the next four to five years, prior to further redevelopment. TfL will continue to monitor the network during this time and work with the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Berkeley Homes to consider future phases of the development.
We have been advised by Berkeley Homes that the turning circle will be ready for buses to serve from 27 July 2013 and so our intention is to introduce the changes to routes 178 and B16 from this date.

Bet commuters and people to and from Kidbrooke Station will love that double run....not, at least with the previous arrangement before buses got diverted away from the estate, they could get off the Eltham side of the railway for the station.

An interesting article in this week's Mercury (can't find it online sadly). Apparently there was a further public meeting about the changes to the 178 and B16 last week. There is still pressure to reroute the 178 but the bit that caught my eye was:
'Andi Cooper told The Mercury "We heard last night that subject to consultation the B16 route around Kidbrooke Village to serve the Page Estate will be restored by May."
As I understand it, the Page Estate is the area to the east of Kidbrooke Village. Given the changes to the road layout, I would speculate that this would require a diversion via Eltham Green Road, the new Boyd Way, and Tudway Road back to Kidbrooke Park Road. One to keep an eye on. I do have some sympathy with TfL on this one who are getting it in the neck for decisions taken by Greenwich Council and Berkeley Homes whose new road layout made it even more difficult to serve the estate effectively than before.

Having been a regular user of the 178 since last summer, the route definitely needs longer single decker or double decker on the school journeys. A lot of time I have stood at shooters hill road , and had buses pass the stop where they are full up especially if it is a hybrid bus. The transfer of the single decker from the 372 to the 178 would be greatly appreciated. Something has to be done about this route, as it's the only one that gives a traffic free connection to the national rail Kidbrooke station from the traffic queues of blackheath.
