Kowloon Motor Bus have put their first BYD single decker into service in Kowloon. The press release contains a decent selection of photos including interior views to give a flavour of what the London might look like.

Some interesting remarks from Alexander Dennis at the Bus and Coach show about the development of new bus models - especially hybrid / electric ones. I can't think what bus they might be referring to! from the latest Bus and Coach

Browsing the latest MD's report to the Surface Transport Panel there is an update on electric vehicles on page 14. In summary - 2 BYD electric buses to enter service "in the autumn". The 4 further buses are seemingly all electric Optare Metrocitys although the word "Optare" is not mentioned! These are for suburban service. TfL are co-operating in a large European scheme to trial all electric buses or diesel electric hybrids with induction charging on a route serving the City of London. Things are still at the paperwork stage so no need for excitement about the route or vehicles!

Some more info on the bus electric charging initiative courtesy of S Cooper on London's Transport Yahoo group. From the EU procurement journal.
"Transport for London (TfL) is proposing to undertake an evaluation of wireless (induction) charging, to assess its suitability to extend the zero emissions range of diesel-electric hybrid buses.
This trial would study the technical capability, environmental performance, operational suitability and regulatory requirements of wireless charging technology for Electric Vehicles (EVs), and assess whether it could play a part specifically in the ongoing decarbonisation of London's buses.
TfL will initiate this project in the financial year 2013/14, with an intention to install primary induction charging infrastructure ('wireless charging stations') in 2 bus stations in London (locations to be confimred). In parallel it is intended to purchase up to four diesel-electric hybrid double deck buses that are fitted with a secondary charging system to recharge from the wireless charging stations. The buses should be capable of running in both electric-only mode for an extended range (to be determined, but anticipated to be up to 10km) or a combination of electric and diesel mode. The buses must meet the standard TfL specification for operating in London.
The buses would operate in regular passenger service for up to 24 months as part of this trial.
TfL anticipates that the charging system(s) shall be capable of a minimum 50 kW (peak) power transfer and probably no greater than 120 kW."

If the electric buses become successful, does it mean we would be seeing some double deck electric buses? What TFL is doing is achieving success!

The newly published TfL Commissioners report for next week's TfL Board Meeting says that the BYD electric single deckers will enter service on the 507 and 521 in November. No specific date given but that, at least, narrows things down a little bit. The Metrocitys are shown as "Spring 2014" for entering service but can mean anything

The description of the picture notes it's in a state due to being stored up since the summer. Paintwork does look faded but I remember someone on here mentioned it has a special paintwork that protects it so maybe that explains the faded look?
