But what does networker93 do in Downe with no oyster or no credit? Buy an oyster card you can get them from anywhere that tops them up. Not sure if there are any oyster outlets in Downe and if there are I doubt they'll be open when the last bus is about to depart.

I think the second part of your statement is irrelevant as even in built up areas, there are many Oyster outlets that do not open late. I agree with the first bit about whether there any Oyster outlets in places like Downe in the first place.

Good to find that Redhill Bus Station and Slough Bus Station have Oyster outlets despite both being served by only one TfL route each

But are they open 24hrs? Or at least throughout bus operating hours? In any case the driver cannot sit and wait whilst networker93 goes to a shop and tops up so he will have an hour to wait for the next 146, unless the driver lets him have a free ride?

At the end of the day on the oyster machine on board buses it tells you how much you have left on your oyster and when its running low you top up (its what i do).

Surely we have to accept cashless will happen sooner rather than later - there will always be people that resist change or refuse to move with the times.
I have noticed an increase in people getting trying to use a £10 note this seems to me to be a trick out of paying the fair as they know drivers wont have change - most drivers let them on regardless.

Having cashless fare does have it pros and cons but what happens if ot backfires and then Tfl have then got so many complaints about Cashless fares?
IMO, we should have something like an Auto-Fare such as correct change only no change given expect refunds can be changed up at head office (If you catch my drift). I know I mentioned it before some were on this forum but Im sure this way would be better.

Yes if somebody gets on with a tenner the driver should take it and give them a change voucher that can be redeemed at an oyster outlet.

Maybe TfL could have the ticket machines reprogrammed so that it alerts punters when their Oysters are low on credit, similarly to how it already alerts drivers when the ticket roll is low.

I have noticed an increase in people getting trying to use a £10 note this seems to me to be a trick out of paying the fair as they know drivers wont have change - most drivers let them on regardless. The problem though is that the bus network is a 24 hour operation and there are always people who are forgetful, disorganised or just not aware of how things work. I know it is a minority of people but it will only take one or two instances of people not being able to travel and encountering trouble for TfL to be dragged through the "court of public opinion". TfL have obviously put a load of effort into expanding the Ticket Stop network but the lack of ticket office facilities at NR stations doesn't help matters in SE / SW London. It will be interesting to see if the DfT sponsored South East Flexible Ticketing project, which will extend ITSO cards across the entire South East, will help ease the problems. However that is at least 2 years away.

TfL should try and get petrol stations and supermarkets to do oyster top ups, as a lot of petrol stations and supermarkets are open 24 hours and or longer than other top up shops/ outlets.
TfL could/should put machines by the side of the road where passengers can top up their oyster cards similar to the cash ones in the center of London, but the oyster card top ups can only be paid for by a credit/debit card, thus reducing the need for maintenance (collecting cash and general servicing).
This would be very unpopular, putting cash fairs up to £2.50 or £3.00 so people would be put off with paying cash, also make the buses correct change only.

People like myself would be unable to use the machines if they take debit/credit card only as I do not carry mine with me the majority of the time - I prefer to pay with cash myself and I'm sure I can't be the only one.
