Travelling on E40D in rain I notice the ceiling on the upper deck always has a strip of water in the middle with drops waiting to fall on the floor . Is this a design fault ?

It isn't a leak but condensation, which also happens in cold weather. So there is some sort of issue with the placement of the whatever runs behind the panel that causes it (probably a warm pipe or something) but definitely not a leak.

Was the bus full by any chance? Usually because of the recent weather, condensation can build up when the bus is loaded. I've noticed that on the SP's on cold morning journeys to Kingston.

It was the first stop of the route I got on and saw it, no matter the amount of people I always see it when it rains .

That is only on the windows (which can also happen on cold mornings where the bus has been sitting overnight) and doesn't appear to be linked to the condensation on the ceiling.

Yes I have seen this on a bus in last two weeks. Once was on T47 which had some condensated water leaking from the top deck left side windows on to the floor which made a huge puddle on the bus' floor.

Well if they had real refrigerative aircon, rather than simply forced air then problem solved. Now before someone flames me that you wouldn't run aircon in the cold, not true. Whilst many consider aircon to be cooling, the name air conditioning gives it away that it is more than cooling, its role is to condition the air, removal of excess moisture being one such thing it is capable of doing, in conjunction with a heater if it is cold.
PS with buses in particular insufficient insulation between the outside roof skin and the inside will cause condensation quite easily in winter. Cold outside, warm moist inside=condensation inside as the moist air cools it forms water drops. But as mentioned aircon will help remove the excess moisture before it starts to condense on the roof. It also makes it a more pleasant place to be, think about what you are breathing when on a bus packed with another 80 odd people.

As it's the highest point of the ceiling, closest to the roof skin, condensation is probably twice as likely to form there, right in the middle. It shows the lack of insulation in between the ceiling panel and roof skin on the ADL buses. IIRC wrights have an insulating layer between the panel and skin.

The odd thing is that it's a perfectly straight line and is the same width along its entire length I'm sure there must be something in the roof causing it as it happens on tridents and e400's.

I first saw it last year when it was snowing and actually thought someone had ran a snowball down the length of the roof lol.

Common issue on Tridents with warm air inside condensating on the ceiling lining. I see it most early mornings when I'm doing interior checks and some buses now have a dirty water mark along the middle of the ceiling. I'm so used to it I usually only walk the length of the upper deck with my head held down to avoid wiping it off!
