Seen this evening on BBC London and ITV London Crossrail extension to Hertfordshire www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-28680186I agree with what was said on the news report that the line risks becoming too busy and overcrowded from day 1. How many more times will the line grow / be extended.

In my view, Hertfordshire should be put on the agenda for Crossrail 2, which I fully support (given that it could add more trains onto the Shepperton Branch, hopefully ), as the current Crossrail is already rather long, running from Reading to Shenfield. Crossrail 2 is also heading towards New Southgate and Chesunt anyway so it would be more logical and easier to link it up to Crossrail 2 rather than adding it onto the current Crossrail plans

I think you need to understand that a number of trains will terminate at Paddington in the peaks and off peak. Off peak 8 trains per hour will terminate at Paddington from the east with only 8 tph continuing west. I think 14 tph will terminate in the peaks with 10 tph continuing west. It looks like Abbey Wood branch - 12 tph peak, 10 tph off peak Shenfield branch - 12 tph peak, 6 tph off peak Central section - 24 tph peak, 16 tph off peak Terminate at Paddington - 10 tph peak, 8 off peak West of Paddington - 4 tph to Heathrow peak and off peak, 4 tph to Maidenhead off which 2 tph run to Reading peak and off peak. At peaks 2 extra tph run to West Drayton. There is therefore loads of opportunity to run more services west of Paddington although more rolling stock would be needed. There is also scope to increase the capability of the ATO system that regulate trains on the Crossrail tunnel section so more trains can run in the future. Given a new station is going to be built at Old Oak Common for HS2 and Crossrail there is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put in new links / tunnels / viaducts to ensure the area is properly connected. Linking through to the WCML is one such important link given how close Old Oak Common (OOC) is to Willesden Junction. The other issues being debated at Old Oak Common are how to route London Overground services through the area and whether it is possible to add a Brent Cross to Hounslow service on the Dudding Hill Line and through OOC. Once the planned redevelopment is done then it will be impossible to add new routes through the area. Creating a big western interchange linking the NLL / WLL / CR1 / WCML / HS2 / the New North Line and the Hounslow - Brent Cross possible service is too great an opportunity to miss. Building the link is similar in concept to the new tunnel that runs under Kings Cross to link the Thameslink route to the Great Northern service. We need to accept that Crossrail as it currently stands will be full very quickly after the full through service opens in December 2019. It'll build up before then as various bits open. However there is an upgrade path to run more services west of Paddington by running to the WCML, to increase train lengths by 2 carriages and then to increase peak frequencies through the route. The central area platforms are being built long enough to take 11 car trains but would need fitting out for the extra 2 carriages. There are two areas where it is harder to add services - on the Great Western line at peak times as all the paths are used up. The second is off peak on the Shenfield line because of the freight paths from the ports to Stratford and on to the North London Line and the fact some are scheduled to cross the slow lines at Forest Gate (having run up from London Gateway port via C2C and a tiny bit of the GOBLIN).

The proposed link from Old Oak Common to the West Coast Main Line to allow Crossrail 1 services to run to Tring has been killed off by the DfT as it does not "represent value for money". This is in a letter from the former SoS to a former DfT minister who is the MP for Hemel Hempstead (on the WCML)! www.hemeltoday.co.uk/news/crossrail-off-the-tracks-as-plans-are-shelved-1-7513704Have to say I think it's a bit short sighted really. And as for citing the Met Line ext to Watford as an alternative - ahem!
