It would be great to know TFL's rationale behind this decision, because tbh I don't see any logic in this. I think the logic is fairly clear - it takes out more buses on the east arm of Oxford Street, it saves money because fewer buses are needed on the 7 and deploys buses which are fairly empty to cover one corridor (to Russell Square) rather than Holborn where there is still the 25 (and the 8 when it returns to Oxford Circus). The wider questions are whether it is right to break the link from Holborn to West of Oxford Circus and whether you want to break the link from Paddington to east of Oxford Circus. I assume TfL have looked at the data and concluded there are no great problems with breaking yet more links in Zone 1. The side effect is that bus travel in parts of Zone 1 is becoming more expensive than the tube because it requires two or more buses (costing a minimum £2.90) rather than umpteen changes on the tube (costing £2.20 on PAYG). I know Travelcards and Daily Caps get round this but I wonder if people are noticing the creeping effect of TfL's capitulation over Oxford St buses and cuts to free up money for elsewhere. I thought the 'Overbussing' issue concerned the western part of Oxford Street, and as the 98's PVR is seven buses more than the 7 won't this just add more buses in the eastern section regardless of how much money is saved?. Plus from what I regularly witness, the 98 is well used from Holborn in the peaks. TFL seem to be lacking in true logic all for the sake of getting as much money as possible, not caring the slightest bit about the inconveniences caused. There are many issues that need attention but this isn't one of them.

I've never heard any official statement stating a particular part of the street would be treated differently from the rest. I don't understand your comment about the 98's PVR. I assume it is broadly the same to reach Russell Square as it is to reach Holborn. The 7's PVR will fall so overly there is a net reduction in vehicles and cost. We will see in due course whether the 55 and 25 can cope from Holborn westwards.

Yes sorry about the 98 comment, just a slight confusion, for some reason I thought you were referring to Overbussing the Russell Square section. What about stand space?, especially with the 8 returning to Oxford Circus which in essence counteracts the curtailment of the 7. I still think the 7 and 98 should be left as they are.

This is all making me wonder if the 8 will ever make a return to Oxford Street, or if the 15 will ever make a return to Regent Street.

I wouldn't mind the 8 staying at Tottenham Court Road but the 15 really needs an extension, Paddington would be nice but Regent Street is absolutely necessary. When is it scheduled to go back anyway?

I wouldn't mind the 8 staying at Tottenham Court Road but the 15 really needs an extension, Paddington would be nice but Regent Street is absolutely necessary. When is it scheduled to go back anyway? The problem with the 8's arrangement is that it parks more than half way to Gower St which is not TCR Station. On the return it only really starts at British Museum which is also not TCR station. Therefore it's a complete nonsense and simply serves to jam up the TCR junction which is now heavily restricted while they dash to finish off the top of the expanded LU / Crossrail station so they reinstate part of Charing Cross Road. They should have made it stand at New Oxford Street near Holborn and be done with it. I suspect it is only sheer necessity that has meant TfL have kept as many buses as they have struggling to get through the West End. I don't get into the West End much at all these days and I'm glad from the chaos I read about on Twitter with buses being delayed for hours trying to get through planned and emergency road works. The other night someone decided it would be fun to dig up Trafalgar Square. Cue complete gridlock. Ditto the Haymarket / Regent St area. Does anywhere else in the world do roadworks quite as appallingly badly as the UK does? I am struggling to think of a major city that inflicts the same chaos on its residents as London does and to think we have *years* of more chaos as the roads are remodelled for multiple cycle lane schemes.

Ultimately Oxford street is doomed because of the continuing rise of Westfield centres. One will probably open in Croydon in the next few years. It is unlikely to be a Westfield as currently it is a collaboration between Westfield and their normal bitter rivals Hammerson ... I imagine it will have a neutral name ... if the unlikely partnership continues. Indeed, this has been known since it was announced that a new shopping centre was going to be built in Croydon.

Route 98 / N98 will be the replacement. Am I right in assuming the 98 is lightly used between Red Lion Sq and Oxford St? Yes the 98 is lightly used.

According to londonbusroutes, the 98's diversion to Russell Square is temporary and due to end 1 December 14. Assuming the 7 is permanently withdrawn from Russell Square, this means that there won't be a bus route serving The British Museum directly

Assuming the 7 is permanently withdrawn from Russell Square, this means that there won't be a bus route serving The British Museum directly But it also says So who knows what TfL is doing at the moment, maybe TfL is experimenting their options for this corridor. All I know is this link (Oxford Street - Russell Square via British Museum) should be retained by atleast one of the two routes (or maybe even a new bus route)
