500 extra buses to be introduced from TFL may be a good idea as it's obviously not NRMs but I don't think London has room to store these extra vehicles anyways. We have the Crossrail project underway which is suppose to improve connections within the capital and I can't keep thinking about how they'll manage to get 500 extra buses unless they manage to find land space and build more garages yet the 500 extra buses doesn't escape from causing congestion.

One of the interesting things in the document that Mr Edd linked to about the new Tower Transit garage proposal is that the Mayor's London Plan and policies specifically safeguard land for bus garages of a given size. TfL were asked to comment about TT's plan for its new garage and are naturally supportive. While there are no guarantees I think councils know they can't keep building on land that could or should be safeguarded for essential infrastructure. I don't disagree with you that there may well be issues about coping with 500 new buses but not every garage is full to the brim and there is sufficient lead time for TfL to build a garage or two if they feel that is necessary.

The updated business plan is now available alongside the other Board papers. To see the increase in pass jnys and kms operated up to 2021 then have a look at page 19 of the pdf. The years 2016-2018 look to see the most expansion but there are increases for every year which is rather better than in the past.

Perhaps this part explains why the next round of tendering hasn't been published yet.

This seams feasible as there are plenty of useful proposals and extensions that could be introduced and resurrected from the past. There is also scope for new routes to be made as well as 24 hour conversions and maybe night routes to be added, lastly with PVR increases anticipated the 500 extra buses would be easily utilised given new bus garages are built. This is also good news as we would see more diverse bus types in London!

Perhaps this part explains why the next round of tendering hasn't been published yet. I doubt it actually. I think the ramifications of buying 200 extra NB4Ls is a key factor because of the cascade implications and whether routes need new buses or not. The base volume of retenders just naturally cycles through. New routes will be added whenever TfL take a decision to introduce them. I suspect that the planned expansion plus NB4L related issues may cause more stress on the procurement teams at TfL and the operators. Two little snippets from looking at the Business Plan - looks like the capital spend for the next two years has gone by £55m which is largely for the 200 extra NB4Ls. Apparently the project authority has gone up by £66m for the extra buses. The second snippet is that TfL intend to buy 3,400 hybrid *double deck* vehicles by 2020. Oh and all euro3 spec buses that haven't received emissions mods will be gone by the start of 2016. They'll be replaced by euro 6 spec buses.

Page 85 includes some tables, here is bus capital expenditure
2014-5 £-108m 2015-6 £-140m 2016-7 £-38m 2017-8 £-27m 2018-9 £-27m 2019-20 £-29m
I'm guessing the cost of the LTs at £0.34m each is in the next two years. I assume the residual 27m per year is other new capital equipment (ticket machines, bus stop shelters, bus info equipment, etc)
The plan includes increase the direct bus subsidy from £410m to £535m (30% increase in subsidy), but only approx. 10% increase in pvr however the spin merchants try and hide this, this suggests a fall in efficiency is planned.

Where will all these extra buses be garaged? Presumably it's too late to stop the sale of Upton Park garage?

Where will all these extra buses be garaged? Perhaps a new bus company (or two) may enter the TfL tendering market in the years to come where they will have their own premises to cater for. There are also industrial units that often becomes available from time to time, such as the units at Beddington which for a while had housed one of the tour bus companies.

Yes, there is now another spare unit/shed at Beddignton Cross. Unfortunately, they are not directly next to BC garage but I wouldn't be surprised if Abellio buys one of them. Opposite BC, DHL has also departed recently leaving more space for potential buyers. What I find strange is that the premises next door to the old DHL building parked their lorries there during the day and Abellio parked their S4 buses there during the night. Not sure how this arrangement works That unit where the tour buses were is now owned by some kind of box packaging company. The spare unit is next to this company

TGM have loads of space at Heathrow, hopefully some new routes will come their way...
