Not sure there is such a thing as a unique location for snapping buses in London. There are bus photos taken almost everywhere. It terms of people who take nicely composed bus photos then take a look at the Flickr collections of "Wandle 190" and "John King". Both make an effort to get nicely composed photos in nice locations. In terms of "scenic" then that's down to the photographer - my "scenic" might be your "hideous backdrop" and vice versa.

If you travel along Beulah Hill on the 196, 249 and 468 you get some great views between the houses that overview the Croydon areas. However with the bus moving the viewings between dwellings are very quick. There is also a brief opportunity going down Knights Hill on the 196 and 468 where you can see some of London's famous landmarks from the distance. Not 100 percent sure on whether you can even see the top of the new Wembley Stadium.

Alexandra Palace on the W3 is always a good view. Non-bus wise, I'll also recommend Primrose Hill (closest to Central London) and Greenwich Park (by the Royal Observatory)

I always wish I had been more into photography when the 121 ran to the Swan & Pike stand in Enfield Lock. That would have been a good stand to take a shot of. Though absolutely zero record of it amongst the oodles of London bus photos on the web so I might be alone in this opinion.
As well as Ally Pally, Crouch Hill/Crouch End Hill/Ferme Park Road can give good photos with the bus rounding the crest of the hill.. if you're skilled/lucky enough you can get Alexandra Palace into the background.
You get a fine view of Central London and the Docklands heading westbound down Shooters Hill from upstairs on a 89 or 486. Not sure how well a photo of that scene would work though. Ditto descending Stanmore Hill on a 142..
Mill Hill gives some decent if 'bucolic' bus photo opportunities IMO. Might have a wait for one to turn up though.

Blackheath, Royal Standard - You get an amazing view of landmarks like the O2 and the Cabot Square Skyscrapers and everything around there.

You both thought of the two places I that first came to my mind If you travel along Beulah Hill on the 196, 249 and 468 you get some great views between the houses that overview the Croydon areas. Yes - I first discovered this on the X68. There's a Harvester up on Beulah Hill which I've wanted to go to ever since - not for the Harvester itself, but for the amazing views! Certainly is something special. You get a fine view of Central London and the Docklands heading westbound down Shooters Hill from upstairs on a 89 or 486. Not sure how well a photo of that scene would work though. I have this as my phone wallpaper - I'm not sure what happened to the original image (it was taken about four years ago on my old iPhone) but it shows a 486 at sunset with the London Eye, Shard and some other bits in the background........for general views, there's a place called Brinklow Crescent near to Shooters Hill (off of Plum Lane) which gives excellent views of the docklands and towards the east (Plum Lane itself from Plumstead is incredibly steep......but I'm getting away from buses so will stop there ) EDIT, found it - not expecting any prizes (was a fast snap on my phone - one of those 'oh wow better get the phone out of the pocket and snap this quick' - as the bus was coming moments) but I like it

Coming down Knights Hill & South Norwood Hill gives you views of Central London & South Norwood respectively. Another one is from the Hillrise Estate near Chase Cross in Havering - great view of the surrounding area there.
