The latest TfL Commissioner's Report has a section about a trial of new speed control technology. Looks like there is going to be a feature about it on BBC London lunchtime news. EDIT - Leon Daniels interviewed on a bus on the 19 on the Beeb. He was challenged as to whether speed had been a cause of accidents. He said no or nearly no. The next point was then "why are you doing it then?" "To make sure things are as safe as possible".

Does the speed restricted technology only work when buses are on the 19 and 486? What if a bus is used on another route during the day?

Does the speed restricted technology only work when buses are on the 19 and 486? What if a bus is used on another route during the day? Honest answer - don't know. Guess - I suspect there is some sort of link to the I-Bus GPS to give the bus location which is then linked across to a route profile that has the speed limit for every point on the route. The technology then limits the vehicle speed if the driver tries to drive faster than the limit. Given the need to have a route speed profile I suspect the system will be inoperable once a bus is away from the route or is set via I-Bus to run on another route. As I say that's all a guess and I haven't seen any detail anywhere other than the Commissioner's Report. There has just been a Mayorwatch article which I guess refers to a TfL press release but that hasn't appeared yet.

Not happy Like like it's route 51 and 89 for me from now on.

Why do I get the impression this technology is going to be hideously unreliable, cause issues with diversions, and be a general failure

I don't think it's a bad thing at all.

I've been sent the TfL Press Release which includes a bit more detail which is quoted below. I haven't quoted everything as some of it is the usual "fluff" you get in press releases.

Not sure why there is an outpouring of grief at a system designed to stop illegal speeding. I for one am 100% behind buses obeying speed limits. Connor et al - are you not?

Not sure why there is an outpouring of grief at a system designed to stop illegal speeding. I for one am 100% behind buses obeying speed limits. Connor et al - are you not? Erm no. I think speed limits in most places are excessive. And I see this scheme causing more short running, if a late running bus isn't able to make up lost time...those some of my initial feelings on the scheme. I don't see great benefits coming from this project, especially on a route like the 486. I'd much rather the effort and money from this project went into installing decent AC units on NBfLs and older buses (such as the 56 reg E's on the 486 funnily enough), Countdown screens are more bus stops... It's just another scheme making traveling by bus an even more unattractive proposition for the majority of the public. Que the inevitable backlash from our righteous, law-abiding forum members. Edit: Of course as a passenger and not a driver, I'm unaware when and IF a bus driver is speeding so final judgement will come when the scheme is implemented.

This just sounds like a waste of money, money shouldn't have to be spent on something like this and LD even said it's has no or near enough a factor in whether speed had been a cause of accidents , Wonder how many bad schedules this is going to show up, esp at night
I'm not saying that buses speeding is good but near enough 85-90% of the bus network doesn't have places where you can be in breach of the speed limit anyway during the day

If London buses were governed like Abellio's 09 reg Enviro400s they wouldn't need the scheme.
