Mayor's Press releaseNote two further phases in the Autumn to add in J, N and P. That's going to pose some interesting issues as to how and when Night Bus changes are phased in. Also a nice nightmare for updating bus stops, Countdown and Spider Maps. Probably means months more delay before Spider Maps even stand a chance of being fully updated. My guess is that the 34, 123, 145, 158, 296, E1, W3, W7 and N86 (yes I know about the new contract) weekend night enhancements will kick in at the same time.

The gossip site that is Digital Spy claims that the night tube will start on 19th August 2016. Link. But only the Central and Victoria lines.

As a trial run and not for use by passengers. This was obvious when the TfL Digital Blog said that there was a series of amended timetables applying to the Central and Victoria for a week in advance of the Night Tube starting. Clearly several things are being tried out to ensure a decent transition. I expect the same will apply when LU eventually gets round to starting services on the Northern, Jubilee and Piccadilly - if they ever do as I think the TU demands for equated terms and conditions and pensions for Tube Lines employees can't be funded. If there's a settlement I'll be amazed and I'd want to know where the money is coming from to fund it. Revised pension arrangements don't come cheap when you look at the TfL scheme!

Jubilee Line Night tube to start on 7 October. I guess we can then expect the weekend night routes out of North Greenwich to get very much busier. I'd also expect the N114 and N183 to probably start then too.

Excellent to see the last of the intended night routes being introduced.
What did the Mayor do that his predecessor could not in terms of getting the scheme operating?

Good question - no one knows and no one has dared ask - yet! I dare say the truth will emerge at some point. I think Boris effectively gave up a few months before May so wasn't overly bothered about whether the Night Tube started under his tenure. Being seen to have "conceded" anything to the unions would have been ruinous to his wider political ambitions hence why nothing happened.

The simple answer is that money was thrown at the problem and lots of extra part time drivers employed. Of course the training took months so the routes ended up 12-15 months late. considering the night service is only every 10 minutes (and in many cases not the full route) only need about 12-18% of the number of drivers you have in peak hour. Be interesting to know how many of these new drivers joined unions or how much it added to drivers wage bill. I vaguely remember seeing figures of £14m (£1.2m per month) as extra operating cost, but presumably this excludes cost of recruitment, training and management time. Real cost is probably being kept quiet for a reason as it's probably making a huge loss, and a fair proportion of journeys have simply replaced last or first tubes, or night buses (which are still running and incurring costs). Might be 50,000 users, but how many of these are extra revenue rather than those who changed journey time or mode. As an example if it's only 15,000 extra fares per night, say £4 fare and 8.5 nights per month, then only getting £0.5m per month revenue I guess eventually the TfL financials will reveal all, if someone compares the costs before and after.

Piccadilly Line night tube to start on 16 December 2016.
Something amazing but true. The Day service on the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow Central - now Heathrow Terminals 1 2 & 3 - started on Friday December 16th 1977. Now, the Night service is starting on Friday December 16th 2016! It was already mainly 1973 stock when the Day service started, and these trains are of course still in service in 2016.

Assuming there are enough trains to launch it of course!! Given nearly half the fleet is out of action with wheel flats I'd expect the Night Tube launch to be postponed to the New Year. Why put extra strain on a train fleet that is massively short of working trains? Seems a ridiculous thing to do when the priority has to be the daytime service. Nice spooky coincidence though.

I wonder if the launch night for the Piccadilly Line night service will actually start on 16th December 2016. I ask because most of the fleet for the Piccadilly Line are currently not in service.
