There has been 2 pieces of news concerning Manchester Metrolink this month.
For passengers, the big news is that the first half of the Second City Crossing is due to open before Christmas. This will be the section from Victoria Station to Exchange Square. It has yet to be extended to St Peter's Square, where the stop is in the process of being rebuilt. Trams are therefore passing through on a reduced frequency until August 2016.
For enthusiasts, it is of interest that Metrolink is being retendered. The 4 bidders are current operators RATP, Transdev, Keolis Amey, and National Express. The new contract is due to start in July 2017.

It took me until yesterday to ride the final new section, between St Peter's Square to Exchange Square. As it opened at the end of February I preferred to go further afield during the subsequent lighter months. I went on a Friday rather than a Saturday as I was doing a Mon-Fri peak hour bus ride in Eccles before it would be too dark in the afternoons. It was just as well I rode that section yesterday, as I was shocked to find it would be closed today for engineering.

The section from Manchester Airport was finally extended into the city centre - to Victoria via Market Street - on January 28th. It terminates in the middle track with both sets of doors opening at Victoria. I know this because I rode it earlier.

Yes this is early. I had heard April for the service to Cornbrook, extended to Crumpsall in the Autumn, but March is really early.

Any news on the planned orbital route, potentially replacing the 52/53 Orbits from Go North West? (I went on holiday to Manchester/Preston recently)

I suppose it's more like a distant reality, a bit like Crossrail Two.

Mixture of everything on the Rochdale line with underground bit at Victoria, then running alongside heavy rail, onstreet running through Oldham and some fast scenic rural sections.

Yeah, with a lot of dodgy-looking KFC knock-offs between Oldham and Rochdale (a bit of a detail I found; I counted seven of them). I suppose that area's a bit like Poplar All Saints in London.
