I can remember as a kid in the 1950s what Brixton was like at this time of year. THE shop was the old 'Bon Marche' building which was part of the John Lewis group, where the cash was transported in tins on a cable system to the central cashier, very posh it was. But ordinary people would use the street markets and Brixton Station Road was the mecca. Some of the veg stalls went over to trees and decorations, and bearing in mind very few people owned a fridge, they would congregate around the stalls selling chickens, only the rich could afford turkeys. The ladies knew the nearer it got to 6:00 the prices would drop, as the butcher wanted to off load his stock for the day, and I remember one year it was like a rugby scrum! If you are interested in the history of the area, I bought a booklet years ago in the Library, which showed a pictorial history of the area. Electric Avenue once had a glass colonnade on both sides of the street, with Rolls Royce's(!) park up there(early 20th century) for the gentry to use all he 'posh shops' Found these on the web View AttachmentView Attachment What a crying shame those lovely glass arcades haven't been retained in their glory. The market would be fantastic with those in place.

Funny you mention that - for years, Lambeth Council (or Lamebeth Council to others) has stated they will install the canopies and other bits to bring the market back to glory days. Apparently, this will go ahead but at the same, they want to appease the ever increasing 'yuppie' population by removing market stalls for cafes & restaurants. So, not are they not content with turfing out the shops from the railway arches but they want to dispose of the market stalls - looks like 'New Clapham' is well on its way!

I'd keep the market and put back the nice canopies. I hate this gentrification nonsense. I like a good mix of local businesses and market stalls. No one needs another Costa Coffee or Starbucks.

Exactly my thoughts - it's scandalous that Brixton is slowly losing its Afro-Carribean identity all for a bunch of yuppies, who 5 years ago, wouldn't of set foot in Brixton because of the notion that something bad happens there all the time. The only good thing that has happened is crime in Brixton isn't as bad as it was - other than that, there isn't much positives from a yuppie invasion - everything is overpriced, shops full of arty, farty people are popping up all the time and gentrification is rife. Dare I say it - I want the old Brixton back, even if the crime was high lol.

Hope no one on here went to Watford today! I got a rather cheesed off txt message from my sister earlier, she lives in Little Chalfont (about a 10min walk from Chalfont & Latimer Stn) to get to Watford, it took her 2hrs 20min!!! A journey that would normally take 30-45min on a normal day
My home town of Uxbridge has been busy on weekends, nothing to compared to what it was like there a decade or so ago though, however I have found that it's more busier during the week compared to what it used to be. In typical Local council fashion at Christmas, of the 3 car parks Uxbridge has Hillingdon council has reduced capacity of one of them by 1/3 to refurbish it! I tend to use public transport over my car during the final run up to Christmas, partly because of reason like that!
