I couldn't find a thread for clapped out trains. Maybe there should be one. Here's a few observations from today. - 465250's AC motor inverters sound quite rough and gritty, the same as a few BREL 465s did with their original motor inverters. - 465017 formed the middle part of a 10-car working today. The lights in its leading car were not working, and it was dark out.

51537 (and coupled cars) on the Northern Line made a whinning noise which from the outside sounds like a 72 stock motor.
Query: how does the numbering system go on tube trains, eg. what would the car numbers be for the other five cars for that train...is there a sequence pattern? Up to now i never really took notice of bonnet numbers on trains.

Chances are it was a compressor running as what you heard The whining slowed down in sync with the train decelerating into the station then wound up again as it left, sounding higher as the train went faster (somewhat similar to the jubilee line's traction motors at low speed).

I think they've done some rail grinding on the southbound around Clapham Common. Same noise can be heard on the Jubilee Line between Baker Street and Waterloo.

That was the station i heard it from whilst waiting for the northbound train. Will try and check again next time if possible.

As so few trains have been withdrawn since 2005 - most new trains being for lengthening or increasing services - some will be clapped out soon. Examples are the class 313 & 315s.
