Hi All
Is it me or have all London E400a like for example T231 ADE33 E277 T1084 and all E400s that same spec, have they had software engine updates from ADL? As they fly off now, this is defo a chnge that happened last few weeks, 1st gears changes normally then 2nd one kickdowns dowm and bus flys off into 3re and kickdown again!

It appears so as a 12 reg example on the 156 did similar although at the time I had thought it was a bus with a working kickdown.

Btw all above mentioned E400s are Euro 5 not Euro 4.

Many E400s behave like that, and some have been for time. First gear is also held. However, if you accelerate slowly then the gears change earlier than normal! I recall some LI 11-reg DN's doing that since 2013 (when I went on the N551 the first time) and I think pretty much all of those are like that these days. I remember the T's allocated to WN for the W3 being like that too. Recently I've found Hounslow's ADE2, ADE28-31 and ADE33 behaving like that, along with most of the 61-reg E's on the 147, and some 13-reg DN's at LI.

On a different subject but I've noticed at least two T's at N which have re-configured transmissions where they behave like all 11 reg and above diesel Enviro 400's where they upshift at low gear ratios much earlier than 59-60 reg examples - T102 is one example.

I had noticed ours at RM had started to become a bit more punchy. More so when they've come back from refurb

Definitely seen some E400s become faster recently - 19754, 19823, E132, E239 and 9552 are ones I've noticed in recent weeks. I believe a 12reg at QB, possibly 9532, had that when it was nearly new as I recall a thrashy 211 journey around the end of 2012.

Hopefully Walworth will look after 9552 and the other 12 reg examples it has recently acquired.

I think like the downgrading of Euro 4 E400s, it seems to be random - like whichever buses are present when the ADL engineer swings by are treated. I suspect it's a nationwide initiative - operators are going to say yes to TopoDyn given the fuel savings quoted, wonder if they realise it also allows the buses to hit higher revs with ease! I've heard several TH Ts, Es from various garages and today, 9532 from Battersea revving up to 2000rpm. The performance isn't to be sniffed at. Up to about 12mph is a bit naff, but from that point these buses shift at a rate not much slower than the DB300. Couple of recent clips here of E198 and ADE14 being floored. Was slightly disappointed at the ADE being speed limited as I've experienced several ADEs going a lot faster than that prior to being touched with the TopoDyn wand. I know from personal experience the QB 12 platers were unrestricted - got one up to 60mph before I decided that was enough, the bus would have kept going Would be a shame if they have been restricted now! E198 - youtu.be/ZKj4CPaL6Q8ADE14 - youtu.be/BTX_o-VTp0c

Suprised a 12reg QB can get even close to 50 let alone 60! The voith e400 at PD behave like that, a lot more revving and its better at higher speeds i believe Are 56reg E400 similar to the 12reg at QB?

E198 - youtu.be/ZKj4CPaL6Q8ADE14 - youtu.be/BTX_o-VTp0cI remember when they were new some of the lower numbered ADEs (ADE1 to about 15-20) would get above 40mph on the 81 (which has a section of 50mph). Certainly agree with the remapped ADEs being fast (ADE14 now gets added to my list), and that is just accelerating to 30mph on the 120! Need to get one on the 81 (a route I haven't done west of Heathrow since Aug 2013 ) or the 222. As for some of the first buses behaving like that, I remember finding LI 11-reg DN's doing that in September 2013.

So I drove 12 plate 9541 on Sunday. I got a surprise when it revved up to 2000rpm in 1st, then soon discovered it's had the Topodyn treatment as discussed in this thread, which basically means it has kickdown. Quite a few of this batch (9524-9558) now have Topodyn, but are still restricted to 1500rpm unless something impedes the rate of acceleration (heavy loads, gradients etc) in which case the bus will decide when it upshifts. Only a few isolated examples seem to have the best performance settings - 9532 is also one (although not very fast) and I suspect 9525 is, based on hearing it pulling away in a similar fashion. If anyone knows of any other in this batch that have been done I'd be interested to hear which ones!
9541 was a beast to drive. It has that slight push-forward feel once it hits about 8mph and it goes very well at all speed ranges. Didn't measure how long it takes to reach 30mph but I'd hazard a guess at no more than 12 seconds. For comparison, the ZF MAN 14.240 takes less than 9 seconds and a healthy Euro 4 ZF E400 takes 12.5 seconds - knock off a second or so for the small number across London which are completely unrestricted at the torque converter stage (some DOEs and 57 plate Es are capable of pulling away TA style). Most Euro 4 E400s sound a bit bland - the Euro 5 Ecolife lump sounds harmonic. Towards the end of 4th, a loud whine could be heard which continued throughout 5th and into 6th. As far as I could tell, it's still devoid of a speed limiter so I know which bus to look for if ever any rail replacement jobs on NSL roads spring up!
09 plate 9471, no longer a London bus, also had a slightly watered down implementation of Topodyn. Despite the remapping, the performance restrictions were still in place - that thing wasn't delivering anything near its plated 250bhp. Asides from the usual long delays in response to throttle application, it had a new feature - if pulling away too quickly after releasing the handbrake, the bus would respond by limiting itself to 1100rpm, taking approximately 30 seconds to reach 30mph on the flat with the pedal to the metal. The likes shall not be missed.
Thanks to the performance restrictions, it could be heard making a lot of noise, but going nowhere fast!

Wondering if ADL or Cummins have been at the Euro 5 E40Hs with their laptops? I regularly use the 436 and the EHs are significantly more prone to hit high engine revs than other E40Hs of the same generation. They accelerate in the same aggressive manner as the original 58-60 plate E40Hs. EH14 for example - youtu.be/qtPtlFWxdysI think that driver was probably enjoying himself with that bus and liked overtaking. The short clip demonstrates the quick rev up when accelerating, even more so when braking, as it does for an extended period 35 seconds in. Surprisingly it has time to reach almost full revs even if the brake is applied as low as 10mph, as shown right at the end. It's not the only one like it - quite a few at NX are the same. Any others in London like this?

I had a N15 one back in June which loved revving up on braking. The driver absolutely loved flooring it. But around Becontree Heath he was told to slow down as he was catching up the LX11 diesel E400 in front, so after that the driver accelerated slowly and didn't even reach 30 . Never seen such a change in driving style during the same journey!
