Well that's going to blow quite a hole in networks in several places.

Sad to see another company go under wonder what will happen to all the contracted and commercial services they operate Well if Arriva have spare capacity they can pick up work in a few places. I think they lost work in places like Shrewsbury to GHA. Stagecoach might mop up a bit at Chester. However services in parts of Wales may be a big problem as quite a few smaller businesses have sold up / gone under in recent years. Whether councils can replace the public (non schools) work at the same scale at an affordable place is going to be the challenge. At least with the schools finishing for Summer in the next week or so councils only have to stagger through for a few days on schools services and then have time to put something in place for September. Some places are going to have no service at all tomorrow leaving some towns with no buses at all. Also part of the Traws Cymru network won't be running.

If that's true, then that's disgusting - something that serious should always be done face to face regardless!

If that's true, then that's disgusting - something that serious should always be done face to face regardless! It was done - quoted in the newspaper article in the first post. Drivers stopped their buses and told passengers they'd lost their jobs and buses wouldn't run from today. Passengers then asked about season ticket refunds etc but, of course, the poor drivers had nothing they could say.

Some sites are quoting full text msg, telling everyone to come to a meeting etc. Not sure it is helpful posting part of a message on a forum for discussion, mods might need to restrict partial posts regarding something as serious as 300 job losses

I think GHA Coaches is the largest bus company to collapse since National Welsh in 1992. I rode with them as recently as May 3rd, from Wrexham to Barmouth on Traws Cymru T3. I understand this is now operated by Lloyds, helped by the Welsh Assembly.
I think the potential intervention from the CMA is making it harder for independents to sell out the big boys, meaning more company collapses than before.

Your last sentence may be correct but doesn't apply in this case. Seems to be a combination of H&S breaches and not paying the taxman. Unless you're Vodaphone the taxman will always get you and they're relentless and don't give a stuff for the wreckage they leave behind. PS I am not advocating tax evasion just in case anyone tries to mangle my words.

It had been noted for the last couple of years the huge expansion of this company, presumably by undercutting the opposition but as other similar companies have shown, tax bill or no tax bill, the cash situation becomes not enough to provide guarantees for further borrowing .

Well yes. I've read on another forum that they have apparently undercut competitors for tenders and have also taken on highly marginal work as "commercial". Yes you need the cashflow coming in the door and yes you need to have profitable work. I think part of the problem is that apparent "low cost" companies become "saviours" of local authorities desperate to keep bus services going hence why there is so much pressure for expansion. Local authorities can say "no" and neither can the bus companies. We've seen this before even with reputable, long standing businesses like OK Travel. They fell because they took on far too much work and maintenance facilities couldn't keep the second hand vehicles going meaning poor performance. So sad given their immaculate reputation before hand.
