My first encounter on them was in Kingston on the 131 when it had an AL only Sunday allocation, and also on the 37 when converted to OPO. Seeing one in Hounslow ( in red) always looked out of place. I say red because of course London Buslines had them on the 81.
Then of course they made a shock re-entry into service at NB , ousting almost new B & C reg Metros which I was enjoying riding on the 65 & 71.
Those NB ones were truly awful, spouting out diesel fumes and really bringing bus travel to its knees. This was tendering how I knew it, seeing good buses depart and old crappy heaps replace newer buses.
FW ran them once in the early 90's on hire from London General on the first Hampton Court Flower show car park shuttle to / from Apps Farm.
I also recall playing dodge the DMS on routes like the 88 on Sundays which had joint S/AL allocations and of course on the 37.
Leyland Nationals, luckily being brought up on the 111 route, back in the 80's and early 90's AV would occasionally provide one instead of the usual Metrobus. My favourite was LS6.
Who can remember seeing the internal LS saloon lights ? Pretty unique, and not one section was ever the same shade of white.

I recall fondly when the 111 converted to M with an influx of vehicles from V, ON and FW in the main, when I was hoping for a brand new allocation. In fact M967 was the only M from new that AV ever received. Good times.

Barking Garage got some of the earliest versions in the late 70s in readiness for their replacement with Titans. I remember standing at the stops towards London outside Barking Odeon the noise their brakes made was awful, spluttering out fumes as they took off too. We usually waited for an RT or RM to come along, warmer, friendlier and much more comfortable than the DMS.
When the Titans started on the 62, they didn't look that different to the disinterested eye but it was like going from a Fiesta to a Granada in terms of comfort and noise.

How could a RM/RT be warmer than a DMS!!! My memories of RM's in the winter were freezing. That is despite sitting at the front downstairs behind the cab. I used to feel sorry for the poor conductor on the open platform with all the breeze coming in. I guess it worked wonders in the summer though for them.

You'd be surprised. Maybe it was helped by the warmer colour scheme but they were definitely less drafty than the DMS' in winter. Maybe living out in suburbia helped. Less stopping and letting the cold in at the back.
