That noise is the resistor bank and Motor alternator pack in the motor coach you get when under power. You find this on most if not all BR design AC or dual voltage EMU's. It's quite a unique sound mind.... The old LO 313's and indeed the 321's if your sat in the right place make the same sound , alot of character these trains but in this day and age of air con and all "mod cons" unfortunately time to go however they did have a extensively refurbished trial 321 unit which I believe had Air con so sure they could of done same with 319's but nothing ever came of it which is a shame would of been nice to give them a extra 10/15 years of life as there due to start being replaced from end of next year . www.eversholtrail.co.uk/news/class-321-demonstrator-coming-soon-on-the-greater-anglia-route

It's quite a unique sound mind.... Not a resistor bank as the 319s were fitted with the then new high power Gate turn off thyristors, instead of reducing voltage with a resistor, the electricity at full is turned on and off very fast (chopped), at full voltage, the off phase gets shorter at faster speeds However they were fitted with DC motors which is what you can hear. The last 5 class 455s had chopper control, but before GTO thyristors, needed additional thyristors to turn circuit off again so cost more and was more complex. High power GTO thyristors had become available by time 319s were specified. Off topic London Underground tested thyristors on last 3 car 1973 stock, it ran with some electronic symbols on its sides, but was later converted to standard. To avoid harmonic interference with signal circuits some frequencies are avoided, and the power pulses skip these ranges which results in a change in the note as though it has changed gear. If you sit near transformer, can sometimes hear a 50hz mains hum when on full load

I heard that Farewell Tour was £64 per person, good grievance… Worse than the D-stock one 😂

I heard that Farewell Tour was £64 per person, good grievance… Worse than the D-stock one 😂 It was £49.13 for Standard Class, although those who aren't members of the Branch Line Society had to pay £12 extra. Unlike the D Stock tour, this one covered several sidings which you normally can't cover with passenger trains (some in depots, others were turnback sidings) and they also went via passenger routes that they didnt normally run on often (especially Brighton to Gatwick Airport via Lewes).

Even then, surely that doesn't justify £64 for essentially a train ride or £50 for a tube ride. Absolutely ridiculous especially when some moan when paying £2-£4 for a garage open day where not only you get to get a feel for how a garage is run but some rides on new & vintage buses as well. Thank goodness I'm no train enthusiast lol.

Thank goodness I'm no train enthusiast lol. Couldnt agree more. Even though the tour was well organised and covered more places that the 319 doesn't usually cover, it is too overpriced. The only tour I am willing to pay that price to do is when there is one organised for the Class 455's when they leave, by which time hopefully I should be earning some money. The 455's are my all time favourites, having grown up with them, and they're leaving SWT by 2020, while Southerns should all be gone by 2023 at the earliest (due to the procurement and ordering of new stock within the next Southern franchise, and it is almost certain they'll be replaced in the next SN franchise, unless they gain new traction equipment)

Such a tour wouldn't interest me as I only really take a passing interest in the rail industry. It would appear that 319's will continue to run for a while yet, certainly on Saturday the Blackfriars to Sevenoaks service was all 319.

Is this something to do with the A Stock farewell tour in 2012? Apparently the D Stock final day of service was not so publicly advertised to avoid overcrowding so maybe the expensive tours allow for this as well

Two of my friends aged 15 were on the D-stock farewell tour okay (and child price was £25 opposed to the awful £50)

Hi there I work for southeastern at bromley south and so I can look forward to seeing the class 319 every day until they are withdrawn.
I like this trains very much and been going on them for most of the last 30 years. Love the noise they make when pulling out of the station.
Love to do a rail tour myself but as you say at the prices mentioned too much myself.
Done the euston station tour and the Clapham shelter tour. Look forward to the Highgate tunnel tour. Underground tour.

YY13VKP told me the 319 tour was for adults only That's right (partly). The BLS don't accept bookings from unaccompanied under 18's, and as nobody else in my family likes trains and they'd be bored out of their minds, I couldn't go on this tour, however under 18's can come if accompanied by someone who is 18+

Are they heading to Arriva Northern in the interim?

Just to add that the Sevenoaks service still seems to be solidly 319.
