Automatic brakes on a vehicle without seatbelts. So foil crisp packet blows in front of bus, system slams on brakes, passengers fly forward. ....but the crisp packet is unharmed. Would it not be easier to introduce a Honolulu style law (no walking in road whilst using a phone) to avoid idiot pedestrians not looking.

Sometimes s**t happens. Can't imagine what it's like to be in a position where your life is ruined but it is such a rare occurence.

I found it interesting that TfL's goal is to reduce the number of fatalities to 0. We can all dream, but this is totally impossible to achieve. Even if we rule out driver error, next day you can have some poor soul tired with life jump under the bus, and then what?
Perhaps appropriate for today, apparently you're more likely to stumble across an Elvis-lookalike than be hit by a bus, by the way....

In Haringey, this will be useless considering all the flytipped builders waste that is sometimes left in roads or by bus stops and bins... you'll need some sort of override key so the bus actually moves

As we seem to have heard next to nothing further about proposals to fit variable speed limiters on buses I suspect this latest fad will also be somewhat swept under the carpet in due course.

I am afraid that it won't be swept under the carpet. TfL are still proceeding with the scheme but it is running many months late. This was covered in the T'port Cttee Bus Safety report. It will be 2018 before new buses are delivered with the new system in place.

With the automatic emergency braking idea i assume other road users could factor this in and take the mick?

Posted on our internal site it says that follwing a succesful trial bus operators will fit Intelligent Speed Assistance later this year.......

Does this nonsense never end? When are cars and vans and lorries going to be singled out for the same treatment? For the past few decades! Cars and vans are tested for pedestrian impact safety and the result forms part of their headline Euro NCAP score. The UNECE regulations specify steadily-improving minimum standards. It's scarcely believable that buses and trucks have escaped attention for so long

Modern cars also have automatic braking (although it can be turned off). If I am using cruise control the car will slow down or stop if I am too close to the vehicle in front, and if it thinks that I am approaching my garage door (or a pedestrian for that matter) it will stop dead. I believe that this is now, or soon will be, compulsory for new cars.

It will just be another part of the job we'll get used to like the Hybrid's with the slowing down when you lift you're foot off the gas, only problem is when it's not working as it should it's a horrible drive because we are not used to it.

TfL have awarded £500,000 spread to 6 Operators for safety ideas Note the Leon Daniels comment at the end, the chosen safety improvements will be incorporated into contracts starting late 2018. Link
