I personally do not use taxis or minicabs, the only times I have its been paid for or its been a free ride. Its just inefficient, but I see its occassionally need. I agree with some of the comments above in terms of the 'untouchable' taxi trade, and we should hold them up highly. Ive never understood that. I see Taxi drivers and minicab drivers as people trying to make a living, so do not differentiate between them.
When was the last time you saw the minicab trade get around and block traffic to get something. Like the Taxi's getting to use a bus lane, and then getting angry when minicabs wanted to use it. Talking about that, I think all bus lanes should only be used by buses, and then by cyclist if and only if there is no segregated cycle lane. Yet I do remember a suggestion that more bus lanes would open up to taxi's, at which point I just banged my head against a wall. Then I think I banged my head against a wall again.

He was useless at TFL and was the same at First group.
I once asked him on his blog why First Northampton was struggling, when the company Northampton Transport was the most profitable of all the municipal operations. He just laughed it off.
A few years later First pulled out of Northampton and Stagecoach United Counties took control of the towns routes.

Leon Daniels. Difficult. Obviously a lovely person who loves his buses but as usual has been pushed around by the political influences on TFL. He has done great things for the bus preservation movement (along with his counterpart Sir Peter Hendy). That is probably the reason for the 90% red rule/WOB blinds. Overall, I guess it is a balance of things that shape any persons career.

The former Head of Finance died suddenly a couple of months ago. That explains this advert. Unfortunately whoever wrote the advert did not spellcheck it nor did the agency handling the recruitment. Apparently the applicant needs to have experience of reporting to / dealing with William Shakespeare! Bard level!!! in a job advert for a post that pays £275k Good grief.

A finance job - not in a month of Sundays. I'm not a qualified accountant and have no in depth knowledge of complex financiing / borrowing mechanisms so that would rule me out. I expect several senior TfL people will apply along with whoever from the private sector is mad enough to try. I *hated* having to deal with almost everyone in LU / TfL finance - spent their lives questioning the numbers, assumptions and judgements made and if reality ever deviated from forecast it was a mixture of "naughty boy" and "I told you so". You could never manage a score draw with them never mind a win. Made what was an important process an utter, utter demoralising nightmare. I completely understand the point of financial forecasting and reporting in any organisation but dearie me did I loathe what was foisted on us.

ServerDWKing535 can crack open the champagne - looks like Leon has left the building or will do tomorrow (as I expected). Interesting to see what Mr Powell does given he started off in Underground and has dealt more with rail than bus issues while reporting to Leon in recent times. He was pretty hopeless on bus issues when he last sat in front of the Transport Cttee. Leon had to do all the "heavy lifting" in his inimitable style. Oh and ...

Agree with all your points there. Currently in Bexleyheath the loop duel carriageway is being turned to one lane just wide enough for a Trident to go down carefully and an entire cycle lane that goes from no where to no where. There isn't exactly much cycle useage in Bexley apart from kids ans I don't think the mantra "build it and they'll come" is worth it anymore. Exactly that, make cycling safer and more people will take it up. I can't understand why that stretch of road was ever built as a dual carriageways in the first place, just encourages boy racers to tear up and down there at motorway speeds. That's what makes it exciting, the sound of roaring engines. Much better than lycra louts weaving up and down and in and out of traffic. What we need is roads, more roads with faster speeds. Faster is better, as we are always told with most things in life. I think it is time for an ambitious road program with more dual carriageways and motorways in London. It is time for the East Cross/West Cross route to be built. This is why the economy has been stifled, with brexit it is needed. Also we need more runways, don't just stop at one for Heathrow, throw an extra one at Gatwick and Stansted.

I await seeing POWER! at the end of your posts now lol.

The Annual Report is always fun reading to see what people get or got paid. Leon was paid the princely sum of £195,393 base salary last year and walked out with an amazing £444,598 as "compensation for loss of employment" of which £277,768 was redundancy payment. I'd love to know what the other nigh on £170,000 was for! He is the second highest paid employee for 2017/18. Only Andrew Wolstenholm of Crossrail earned more but his base salary has been famously high.
