Not often this crops up as a subject for TfL discussion but an update paper has just been to the TfL Safety Panel. Basically a lot of it is about providing toilet facilities for bus drivers but also mess rooms etc. content.tfl.gov.uk/sshrp-20170928-item10-bus-driver-welfare.pdfMay be of interest to / cause consternation from the bus TfL bus drivers on the Forum!

Long overdue, but will it make any difference? One of the major factors in driver welfare is the driver seats, most are f*cked!

Is the 124 really the only route with no toilet facilities at either end? There used to be a pub near the St Dunstons stand that drivers could use but that's long since closed. And isn't the 126 the same? Shares the same stand at Eltham and the only toilets at the Bromley end I can think of are The Glades shopping centre (which obviously won't always be open) or Bromley South station which is a bit of a walk?

What about night routes ?
N199 certainly doesn't have toilets at St Marys Cray.
Can't rely on nearby business premises to be open if it's these facilities relied on during the day.
Are there TfL toilets in Trafalgar Sq ? I'm aware there are "p*ssiors" but what about female bus drivers ?

Out of curiosity, what do drivers do if they need to go to the toilet? Stop the buses mid route with passengers on where there are toilets or running light to somewhere? Whats the protocol? And what is the best way to avoid lost mileage in this situation if there are no toilets at either end of the route?

I don't know if that would count as I suppose if they wanted to be awkward they could say toilets were for customers only although I would imagine most businesses wouldn't mind bus drivers using their toilets?

Some routes have toilets nearby, but they are not TFL ones. Example Thamsmead they have Public toilets run by the council. They are so disgusting that you couldn't even take a dog in there and the other alternative is Morrisons.
The 160, 428, 492 all have toilet facilities at both ends of the route only problem with Bluewater is they close at a certain time.

And what is the best way to avoid lost mileage in this situation if there are no toilets at either end of the route? I've been on a N551 loads of times where the driver turns off the engine at Beckton bus station and dashes for the toilets in the rec room. At least they're curteous enough to apologise for nature calling, because they're chuffed when they arrive at Gallions Reach to no toilet. I've actually tried to educate bus drivers that the Tesco in Gallions Reach is 24/7 from midnight Monday to midnight on Sunday; but in all honesty TfL should really provide them with that information. Drivers sometimes run light to Beckton bus station for toilet facilities and if they're late, they'd start service there (Go Ahead were really notorious for this when SI ran the route). sid there are loads of routes where either end don't have toilet facilities. 'Estate routes' would feature high on this list; routes 294 and 368 are such examples.

I can imagine what the toilets in Thamesmead would be like and Morrisons definitely sounds the better option. The most disgusting toilets I've come across are at the Hainaut Street stand in Ilford although that was a few years ago so they may have improved since. You would have thought that the bus waiting room at Bluewater could be kept open after the centre has closed allowing access to the toilets there.

368 used to be a nightmare, toilet at chadwell heath used to close at 10pm, iirc. I used to take the bus back to BE if I needed number 2's.

Route 294 does have a toilet facility right outside its stand at Havering Park and the 368 does have Public Toilets outside its stand at Chadwell Heath however they close at 10pm.
