They deserve it.
When I visited the area a few months ago - drivers were very helpful and friendly, network was reliable, buses were clean inside and out, and well stocked with timetable booklets (which many operators fail to do). Thurrock is one of the few areas of the country where I have been impressed with the bus network.

Well here's a thing. Says a great deal about Ensignbus and not very much at all about First Essex.

Well here's a thing. Says a great deal about Ensignbus and not very much at all about First Essex. Twice in two months now, something must be up somewhere - have to say, goes against what I observed of First South Essex during my recent trip down that way where everything ran to time and turned up

As I understand, no fares was taken so registration isn't needed Now that's what you call Above and Beyond , No fare collected , just sending out one of the Spare Buses that are at Lakeside just to make sure people get home ! A proper bus company shame they aren't all run like that and from what I've seen on Twitter people seem to like the route 31 in Brentwood that Ensign are competing with First's route 37 on maybe they will start a Route over the 100 who knows what future holds ...

Yes, they wouldn't have collected fares. Ensign operated the last 100 a few weeks back too, sometime around Christmas I believe (hence why they have said 'once again' in their tweet). Shame on First Essex really, but it doesn't really surprise me. Cancelling the last bus on a route is one of the worst things an operator could do, especially if they don't warn customers about it - one sure way of making passengers want to drive a car or get a taxi if they are out in the evenings.
I would imagine Ensign would only offically take over 100 if First pulled out themselves, and probably only between Lakeside and Basildon. Their take-over of routes in Brentwood for example, has been very slow and steady.

I would imagine Ensign would only offically take over 100 if First pulled out themselves, and probably only between Lakeside and Basildon. Their take-over of routes in Brentwood for example, has been very slow and steady. It would need First Essex to pull off the 100 before Ensign made any sort of move. IIRC the 100 is something like x15-20 daytimes so pretty frequent for such a long route and presumably a money spinner for First. I can't see Ensign going into a full "bus war" on the 100 as it would be too costly for them to compete effectively. Ensign tend to be good at spotting gaps or weak services where a decent service would bring in patronage and money. This seems to be their strategy in and around Brentwood coupled with winning the 21 on short term tender. I assume that's now a commercial operation as Ensign seem not to like tendered bus service work. Obviously rail replacement is contracted but that's a speciality for them. We've speculated a fair bit about Harlow where I think Ensign's quality might work but Arriva are too dominant for it to be worth Ensign having to set up and run a remote operation. Although Harlow is less "cowboy infested" these days there aren't that many easy wins there. Even expanding on from Ongar towards Epping seems to be something Ensign are relutant to do with Trustybus still active in that area.

I did mean to post the other weeks about the amount of positive praise Ensign received when they ran a route 100 journey then as well. Seems passengers are pretty annoyed with First.
Well done Ensign.

The good publicity engendered by and for Ensign will far outweigh the cost to them of running the service. The reverse applies to First Essex, of course, not that they may care.
