Seems Arriva are running a number of promotions in January including a free day ticket if bought using the Arriva app. There are also "free gifts" at Arriva bus stations on 15 Jan 2018. www.arrivabus.co.uk/january/

Speaking of Arriva tickets, we all know that the intalink explorer isn't valid on the 724. However, there is a sort of loophole around this. A bit of research and confirmation from Arriva resulted in me finding that Arriva Hert's all zone ticket (£7.60) is valid on the route, even between Heathrow and Maple Cross. I will try it in the next few weeks and report my findings.

Must be one of the few routes where a day ticket is cheaper than singles and returns I can just see the driver shaking his/her head to my request, in which case I will just pull up the zone map.

To use an All Zones shires ticket it has to be purchased as a weekly//4 weekly/annual in order to be valid on the Heathrow section. In short there are now no day tickets valid to/from Heathrow. (I have contacted Arriva to find out whether the full range of day tickets are available from Uxbridge) I find it extraordinary how a commercial bus operator can make bus travel so difficult, almost as if the 724 is some kind of exclusive golden era Green Line service only a select few are allowed to use, which with the quality and state of vehicles at the moment it most definitely is not!

It amazes me the 724 still exists, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see it withdrawn, or to be completely split into two routes, maybe Harlow-St Albans, then St Albans to Uxbridge. On the last time I travelled the whole route, it was fairly busy between Hertford and Uxbridge, but after that it was just me and one other person continuing to Heathrow, on an hourly frequency!

I suspect increasing traffic congestion, leading to lengthened journey times and poor reliability, is seriously dampening down demand for travel to and from Heathrow Airport. Most travellers in its catchment area who can afford to fly in and out of Heathrow would be prepared to pay for the door-to-door convenience of a pre-booked taxi/minicab. Also the route cannot compete with TfL services between Uxbridge and Heathrow on fares. Carousel gave up serving Heathrow Airport last year and cut its routes back to Uxbridge.
