A bit of an involved read but attached below is an academic paper on the impact of a simplified, redesigned bus network in Barcelona which is designed to allow people to transfer between routes. Barcelona bus network paperThe main finding is that a simplified but well designed network has attracted more passengers and increased usage on the network rather than just on individual routes. No doubt something that people at City Hall and TfL may be pondering for London.

Funny you mention this, I'm currently in Barcelona, it is a well-designed system, people really do use the buses, The D20, for example, runs near enough every 6 mins, like the majority of routes over here, with mainly 12M MAN Castrosua's and various Bendy Buses, I don't think it would work in London, but I'd like to see them try and fail

There's an interesting article in the latest Buses magazine about the Barcelona network.

We now have the one-hour bus ticket in London that removes one of the main objections to changing buses. Given the forthcoming closure of Oxford Street, a comprehensive review of north-south as well as east-west bus links in the West End, along the lines of Barcelona, should be a top priority for TfL.

Given the forthcoming closure of Oxford Street, a comprehensive review of north-south as well as east-west bus links in the West End, along the lines of Barcelona, should be a top priority for TfL. They have three priorities - buses out of Oxford St, saving money and cleaner vehicles. All mandated by the Mayor. Nothing else will happen unless it is related to these 3 objectives.
