If you want tight timetabled route. Get out into the countryside. For example I was on the No1 Worthing to Midhurst.....and I'm a rapid driver.... I struggled to maintain headway, the route needs an extra 10 mins at times so your not driving like you stole it down country lanes in a E300! The last trip in the dark was the worst thing. Not one driver likes the Midhurst in the dark run..... When it's raining its even worse

I’d have to say the 321 probably isn’t as tight as it used to be given its had several reschedules in the past 2 years.
One route that id say is very tight for time in the late evenings especially is the 486, IIRC 35mins end to end.
I used to drive the N89 when we had just over an hour to do Erith to Trafalgar Square!! That was of course when most roads were 30mph, now they get something like an hour and 20 mins or an hour and 30 mins at weekends to do the run and baring in mind most roads the route now serves are 20mph limits!

Yes the 486 is about 35 minutes in the evening but I did an end to end ride on it a few weeks ago and the driver kept to time without having to floor it, no hanging about to lose time either.

All I have to say is I love routes with tight timetables. I'm tired of all this, crawling and holding back every so often and having passengers complaining. I just like to drive!
Some journeys on the 41, 73/N73 (when i was at SF), 123, 149, 243, 253/N253 (when I was at SF) & 259 are like this. You have to sink your right foot, no prisoners. If you have a slow bus especially on the 123 and 41 your finished ha ha ha ha.

I used to especially love doing the old N77 (now N87) with a good thrash of those PDL class Tridents. The N11[1] was similar and was near enough impossible to get to the other end on time, although I wasn't too keen on doing that route as we weren't yet allowed to pull out the faster 53 reg WVLs nor the Tridents... although I and a select few did manage to sneak the latter breed out now and then. I would certainly try to pull out one of the 06 reg Es if I was still working there today. The regular 11 in contrast had such an abundance of running time, which is not surprising considering the whole route is practically central London baring the section west of Chelsea Town Hall. I once did a day shift on route where the duty card had a running time of 23 minutes along the section of route from Victoria to Sloane Square. When I used to do the old 239[2] the running time from Victoria to Clapham Junction was 22 minutes at night with 2mins stand time at Clapham Junction before the 22 minute journey back to Victoria where we would then get 12 minutes up there....essentially one hour for the complete rounder. [1] - before it's western reroute from Wembley Central to Ealing Broadway [2] - now the 170 between Clapham Junction and Victoria

Something worth mentioning is night buses on Bank Holiday Sundays. Weekend levels of demand and traffic but at weeknight frequencies with weeknight running times.
Almost guaranteed to have a spirited run on any night route which normally has extra running times on weekends. My ride home was pretty lively tonight!

From personal experience route 81 late at night can be tight, the last 440 you definitely need to move, and the N65 and N111 can provide a challenge if the nightclubs are open in Kingston. Route N9 can be tight as SP's are not generally the quickest buses on the road, and accelerate like an arthritic snail.

My experience with lively routes evening times are better for some routes.
My fast routes are 85. Once your out of Norbiton or out of Putney Heath the section along Roehampton and Kingston Hill is a quick flow.
170 is a quick route. We once got in from Battersea York Road, we deliberately left the 44 behind and a got this. It flies down the back streets getting to Victoria , we saw the same 44 stuck on Ebury bridge road which was probably picking up passengers.
87 is alright. I’ve used it afternoons. Because it runs with multiple routes. 156 and 77 helping on sections between Vauxhall, Clapham Junction and Wandsworth.
I’ve had a few quick journeys on the 3. Brixton to Kennington. Flying down Brixton road around Midday. 159 and 59 picking up passengers at various stops which the driver planted the foot to the floor to overtake so must have been a decent run.
