The Sunday Times last weekend included a feature on First and their plans to divest FirstBus UK. It made it sound more likely to be to multiple purchasers than to a single purchaser. What's going on with the bus market? I wonder who will pick up the spoils when First are gone? Their rail operations aren't that great, SWR has further industrial action on the horizon, and the Class 442 rollout hasn't gone down well. I'm surprised the article mentioned them wanting to concentrate on North America when they were looking to pull out of running Greyhound A company that seems willing to ditch other operations elsewhere doesn't sound like the best of investments to me...

Blow for Coast as First Group board contender turns down nomination City AM, 20/06/2019, p.5, Alexandra Rogers Further coverage of the First Group/Coast stand-off with the focus on David Martin, former Arriva CEO, deciding not to agree to stand for a board position. This is seen as a blow to Coast.

I wonder if that is because the consortium he is working with for Arriva is making progress ... which I knew which one it was so I knew which one I wanted to win!

The Sunday Telegraph of June 16th revealed that he'd left it too late to be nominated. Whether this was by cock-up or design is left to the imagination.

I expected Rotala would be interested in one of the Manchester-area First operations, they are looking to expand through strategic acquisitions.

I expected Rotala would be interested in one of the Manchester-area First operations, they are looking to expand through strategic acquisitions. The announcement includes a mention of Rotala running approx 240 buses in Greater Manchester once they take over First Bolton. This will make them the 2nd largest bus operator in Greater Manchester.

Could RATP be eyeing up First's Oldham operations? They have just sold Yellow Buses Bournemouth to its management team, here is a quote from a press release by the CEO of RATP Dev:
“Our decision to step down from our commercial bus operations in the Bournemouth deregulated sector pertains to our strategic focus on our franchise operations in London, together with our sightseeing and coach businesses in Bath, London and the North West”
RATP Dev already has a presence in the North-West through its ownership of Selwyn's of Runcorn, which operates TfGM-contracted route 129 (Middleton local service) and a number of TfGM school routes. If RATP were to take over First's Oldham operations they would be well-placed if franchising comes to Greater Manchester.

Given that there will be a few hurdles along the way before bus franchising can come to Manchester, I now doubt RATP will buy First Oldham. I have had a change of heart since RATP divested Bournemouth Yellow Buses. RATP Selwyns also had a tender for routes 391/92 Stockport - Macclesfield in 2018-19 but lost these routes to Manchester Community Transport, part of HCT Group. RATP Selwyns stopped running a tendered route in Liverpool last July. I reckon they will not bid for route 129 next time, which could be snapped up by GNW, HCT or Stagecoach next time.

I understand the divestment of First Bolton to Rotala Diamond is effective from Sunday August 11th.
